How To Reclaim Free Time

If you’re anything like me, you probably spend a fair bit time on-line, checking emails, surfing the net, updating Facebook, writing blogs… the list goes on!  I’m good at making sure all of these activities have their ‘place’ in my day so that I’m not constantly distracted, but I do feel as though I’m permanently plugged in and waiting for new information.  It’s fantastic that we have access to all of this 24/7 but being switched on all of the time isn’t the best way to strike a healthy balance in your life.  So I’ve decided to reclaim some free time – here’s how…

Steal It Back

Most of things I do on-line are habits.  I check my emails multiple times a day, I look at Facebook more often than I care to admit, and I have a plethora of other things that I do to keep my business running that are on-line and accessible all of the time.

The problem is that my handy little iPhone means I can also plug myself into all of this information from my sofa and bed, or when I’m out walking the dog or sitting in a cafe with friends.

For many of us this addiction to the on-line world knows no boundaries, so even when we’ve finished work for the day we’re checking emails on the bus or scrolling through a long news feed, meaning that we’re still plugged in and our poor brain has little or no time to log off and relax.

I’ve found myself on numerous occasions grabbing my phone when a friend has popped to the bathroom so that I can quickly check my emails in-between our conversations, hardwired to always be ‘in touch’ and on top of the latest updates.  At times I seem unable to just sit there and enjoy a moment of nothingness – peace, quiet, and my own thoughts –  instead choosing to fill the gap with more on-line data.

And I know I’m not alone.  I see many of my friends, family and clients doing exactly the same as if it’s become the ‘norm’.  But as time is still – and always will be – our most valuable commodity I’m keen to readdress the balance and claim back some extra minutes and hours in the week that could be better… like having spent having quality conversations, building better relationships, or enjoying some much needed downtime.

So my quest is to start disconnecting, to reconnect with the off-line world! It’s time to stop checking emails when I really don’t need to, start turning the computer off on Sunday’s to get some quality family time, and quit checking Facebook when I should be trying to get to sleep!  I’m also going to stop frantically logging on to my laptop during ad breaks, downloading emails on my phone just because I can, and leaving my computer on 24/7 to reduce the temptation to ‘just quickly check’ something!

What could you do to reclaim some all-important free time? Post a comment below and join me in my mission to disconnect!
