How To Create More Spare Time

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t like more spare time.  It’s like gold dust, hard to find and very valuable when you do come across it!  But why is finding this illusive commodity so tricky?  If you want to create more spare time in your week here’s how, and the good news is it’s pretty easy…

Recently my husband and I were whinging about how there aren’t enough hours in the day, and with a 6 month old baby in the fold (plus a pretty full-on toddler!) we’re normally exhausted by the time we sit down to dinner at 8pm.  We were struggling to find more hours in the day to exercise, and to go after some big goals we’re keen to achieve, but we were also struggling to fit enough sleep in too – so how the hell can you do even more when you’re already run ragged?

Then I spent a bit of time coaching myself, listening to the advice I dish out to my clients, and the answer was pretty easy.

You see it’s all about priorities.  Of course.  But here’s the lynchpin – as well as knowing what’s most important to you, it’s also critical that you squeeze out any activities in your day that you do because you think you ‘should’.  You know, the things that you often feel guilty about, the things that hang over you like a dark cloud, and the things that you don’t really want to do but for some reason feel compelled to.

The problem with tasks that you think you ‘should’ do is they can play havoc with your mindset, as well as take up way too much of your precious time, leaving you feeling despondent and time-poor by the end of the day.

On top of that, if you give the ‘should’s’ priority over the things that actually ARE important to you, you end up with an imbalance, and that’s not very much fun – as we found out.

So take a moment now to look at your day and week: –

  • Count how many things you’re planning on doing because you think you ‘should’.  Write them down so it’s crystal clear.
  • Now draw a line through each item that you can realistically forget, cancel, not go to, or delete.

Forget feeling guilty, it’s time to focus on priorities.  You can’t create anymore physical hours in the day, but you can spend your time differently and ultimately free up extra minutes and hours that you previously didn’t think you had.

When you cut out the should’s and get clear on what’s really important to you, it’s amazing how different your day can look and feel!
