How To Cope With "Too Much To Do"

We all have those weeks where it feels like there’s way too much to do and the stress that causes can make an already difficult situation overwhelming.  But unless you win the lottery and dart off to a deserted island, the chances are you’re going to have to deal with what’s going on around you.  So what can you do to make life easier?  Here are my top 3 tips…

Get Back In Control

Don’t let that horrible feeling of being out of control and overwhelmed take over – follow these 3 steps to get back on track with a fresh perspective: –

1.  Accept that you can’t do it all

Going into a state of overwhelm and trying to manage unrealistic expectations is a recipe for disaster.  If you’ve got too much on then the words ‘too much’ should indicate an adjustment is required, rather than desperately looking for a way to fit the unrealistic in.

First and foremost, focus on what’s urgent AND important.  You must prioritise your work load if you want to get through the hectic times – without prioritisation all the time management skills in the world are pointless unless they’re applied to the right tasks.

2.   Focus On One Thing At A Time

Impersonating a spinning wheel, whirling around doing multiple things at the same time won’t help you get any more done, in fact quite the opposite.

Multitasking does nothing other than slow you down and make you more unproductive as your brain has to toggle between each task individually – rather than simultaneously – resulting in each task taking longer to complete and with less accurately.

Prioritising is the key to managing an overflowing to-do list, not multitasking, so make sure you’re focusing on the right tasks, one at a time – you’ll get a much better result in a calmer and more in-control manner.

3.  Take A Reality Check

Often when we’ve got too much on we get stressed and overwhelmed, and our perception of reality gets warped so before you know you’ve turned a molehill into a mountain.

To get back in control it’s important to sit down with a calm head and look at your situation laterally.  Imagine a friend dealing with the same scenario and them asking you for help – what advice would you give them to help clear the fog?

When you can take yourself out of the equation and imagine being the one giving advice, it’s often much easier to create a clear and focused mind, and as a result approach your wild to-do list much more calmly, with less emotional baggage.

By prioritising effectively, focusing on the right things one at a time, and creating a clear and calm mind you are much more likely to be able to deal with a demanding to-do list, and come out of an otherwise tenuous situation unscathed.
