When you go to school there are some fundamental subjects you learn, right? Of course. And no amount of hookie will get you out of them because they’re seen as critical to your future. But there’s one subject that surprisingly no-one ever gets taught, no-one ever seems to care about, and so many people flunk later in life. And yet it’s something that’s critically important to all of us.
That subject is time management.
Sure, we’re taught to turn up on time, be on time, tell the time. But where’s the curriculum on how to spend your time wisely, be productive and use your most valuable asset in the best way possible?
I’ve spent a lot of the last week at speaking gigs, talking about my obsession with time management. And what I’ve noticed is that some of the smartest people out there still don’t know how to manage their time effectively.
Yes, they get by. But just imagine how far they could go if they had the time management smarts that I think everyone should be taught!
You see, no-one goes to time management school.
Some people get sent on time management courses by their employer, and lots of people read time management books, but there’s no compulsory attendance on this key topic.
So what I’ve found after nearly 10 years of coaching, training and speaking on productivity, is that many people are just ‘getting by’ with tips they’ve picked up over time, or are struggling their butt off to stay on top of their to-do list with the minimal knowledge they’ve pieced together from colleagues over the years.
Which is better than nothing. But nowhere near as good as it could be.
So if you’re reading this at work whilst drowning under your to-do list, feeling frazzled and overwhelmed by how much you’ve got to do, and deflated by the fact that you don’t know how to make it better – first up, you’re not alone.
Most of the people I spoke to this week feel the same. Because they also missed the invitation to ‘Time Management High’.
But that doesn’t solve your productivity problems.
Action does. You’ve missed graduation, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be an adult student.
What I’m saying is, don’t settle.
Stop struggling, making do, and burying your head in the sand. Time is your most valuable commodity so get committed to spending it wisely, and educate yourself about ‘how’.
Now this isn’t a pitch on how you can work with me. You know productivity is one of the things I’m passionate about, so I don’t need to educate you on that. What I really want right now is for you to be the General of your time, and be in control of it. And that will only come from education.
So however you choose to up-skill, make the commitment right now to do something about it. Decide to master your time once and for all, and get excited about how much more you’ll have the ability to achieve and enjoy when you’re able to spend your time super-smartly!
