When It All Gets Too Much

I’m all for getting bigger and better results, but sometimes life can be overwhelming and being pushed to do more and more can be the absolute opposite of what’s actually needed to move forward.  If you ever have those days when you feel overwhelmed by all the stuff you’ve got to do, tired at the prospect of doing it all, and stuck doing nothing because you don’t know where to start, you’re not alone.  Thankfully the solution is much more straight forward…

Stop

Balance is important to everyone – it’s great to accelerate through life and to reach your goals and aspirations as quickly as possible, but if you set yourself up in a way that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and tired it’s likely you’ll hit unnecessary hurdles along the way and cause yourself more damage than good.

The simple fact is that occasionally we just need some downtime to reflect and recharge in order to pick ourselves up again and keep on progressing.  For go-getters that’s ofter easier said than done when we’re used to racing around, trying to make the most of every single minute we’ve got.

So if you’re feel overwhelmed and in need of a readjustment take a moment to read through these 5 quick steps to help you get back on track and in a better head space quickly: –

  1. Stop – Don’t do anything else, simply stop where you are
  2. Reflect – Take a moment to notice how you’re feeling and what you were doing to get yourself to the point of overwhelm
  3. Time Out – This is the critical step where it’s time to go and do something completely different: visit the gym, go for a walk, meet some friends … whatever it is for you, it needs to be far removed from what you were doing when overwhelm kicked in
  4. Enjoy – This downtime is an opportunity for you to re-energise and refresh your mind so enjoy it and don’t rush it!
  5. Refocus – Now that you’ve changed your emotional state and recharged your batteries you can get back to your to-do list with a clearer and more focused mind.  Take a moment to decide on your priorities and then work through them systematically.  This takes the emotion out of the situation and allows you to move forward more easily.

Don’t feel guilty for taking time out – it’s amazing how the power of a clear and re-energised mind will help you accelerate quickly through the things that had previously left you stuck and overwhelmed.
