Do you remember when you started school? I don’t, it was a long time ago! But I’m pretty sure I was nervous, unsure, tearful, anxious, sad, and a myriad of other less ideal emotions during those first couple of weeks. When you’re circa. 5 years old you have no choice but to go to school, and despite how you feel, you just have to suck it up and get on with it. Oh how things change when you get older….
My eldest daughter Charli started school for the first time last week and it’s been a period of transition for all of us. There were tears from her AND me, and yesterday was a particularly unpleasant goodbye which I hope we don’t have to replay. But she came home smiling her head off, very happy to go back today. So what has all of this got to do with you, your career or your business?
As kids we’re pretty adaptable to change. We get told to do something new, and despite any nerves or apprehension, we tend to just get on with it and accept the direction we’re given. But as adults, we put up barriers, carry baggage around with us, and become really good at creating excuses to avoid the new and unknown.
As I watched Charli go into school today, happy and excited, it got me thinking about all the things we could be doing if we just embraced change like she has.
Imagine if you knew you ‘just had to’ get on with something that’s been outside your comfort zone for a while or something that you’ve become well-versed at putting off. If push came to shove and you just got on with it, how different would your career or business look now?
There’s something I’ve been putting off for years. Literally years. It’s stupid because I know it will skyrocket my business but there’s been a block there for a while. However, watching my tiny little daughter, full of nervousness and apprehension, step up to the challenge of starting school and deal with those emotions so well has given me a new perspective on what I ‘just have to’ do. After all, if she can do it, I just have to too!
So what’s your ‘just have to‘? What have you been thinking about doing, toying with for years, putting off, or just dreaming about? Stop being an adult about it, and start thinking like a 5 year old. You ‘just have to’ do it, so quit the excuses, imagine being walked into school and asked to get on with that ‘task’ and do what you need to do to finish your day with a smile on your face.
Don’t overthink it, just imagine it’s a given – just like starting school – and simply start putting one foot in front of the other to move forward. Sure, it’s scary right now, but do you think it will always feel that way? Hell no! And in fact, that transition from fear to fun might simply be a matter of hours or days … a drop in the ocean really.
So let me know what your ‘just have to‘ is – post a comment below and take the first step to a high level of accountability and progress. Just like Charli – and me – I’m sure you won’t regret it!
