How To Escape A State Of Stuckness

For many years athletes have done all they can to improve their performance, from specialised training programs to nutrition and drugs.  Nowadays, the focus has changed.  Whilst nutrition and training are critical, they also know that their mental state is key and no matter how strong their ability, if they’re in the wrong state it’s impossible to perform at their absolute best.  But it’s not just athletes that can benefit from a change in focus – every one of us can see better results personally and professionally if we follow suit…

Time To Think Differently

What state were you in today when you got out of bed?  Are you having one of those fantastic days when you feel like you can conquer the world, where no challenge is too great and no-one can get you down?  Or do you feel as though every one’s aggravating you, you can’t seem to get anything done, and the fact that there were no empty seats on the bus is enough to bring on emotional trauma?

In both scenarios – which we’ve all experienced to some degree at one time or another – you were the same person with the same abilities.  The only difference was your state, and how you let your mindset affect your performance and outlook.

Take a moment to check what state you’re in right now.  Are you: –

  • Emotionally – frustrated, irritable, dissatisfied?
  • Physically – stressed, exhausted, tense?
  • Mentally – unfocused, worried, distracted?

Now think about how you would LIKE to be: –

  • Emotionally – excited, happy, content?
  • Physically – relaxed, energetic, energised?
  • Mentally – focused, confident, motivated?

The trick here is to become more aware of your current state, as awareness is the first step towards action and change.  When you notice that your state isn’t quite what you’d like it to be, that’s when you can choose to change it.  As Christ Barez-Brown said

If you don’t consciously choose your state, one will be subconsciously chosen for you.  So wake up!

There are endless ways to change your state, and they don’t have to be complex – as long as you feel a positive shift in the direction you want, then it worked.  So try some of these today and get into a positive state now: –

  • Move – get up, go for a walk, change seats, make a coffee
  • Listen to your favorite music – just one verse of the right song can be enough to help you ‘snap out of it’
  • Talk to someone who will make you laugh and change your perspective
  • Reframe – think about how you could look at your situation differently – there is ALWAYS a positive side
  • Relax with a good book, some exercise, meditation – whatever helps you feel calm

By taking the time to recognise your state, and giving it some focus, you will move your mind from being stuck in a negative place to a space of resourcefulness and positivity.  Even the tiniest of shifts is well worth the effort!
