Does Your Relationship With Time Suck?

Last week I was mucked around by someone who wanted my help and her interesting response to the situation got me thinking about the value different people place on their own time.  I hate wasting time, and I can’t stand it when other people waste mine, but I know that not everyone gives their time the same level of respect I believe it deserves, and this can be seen in the way they manage their career, relationships and life in general.  Placing a value on your most precious commodity is an essential ingredient in life and it’s a great starting point if you want to make some significant changes personally and professionally.

Don’t Be A Waster

One of my first corporate jobs was working for the professional services firm KPMG, and from the day I started it was compulsory to record how your spent your time during the day in 15-minute increments.  As tedious as that process was, what it meant for me was that I became acutely aware of how I spent my time very early on in my career, and how easy it can be to waste it.

Fast forward to now and the majority of my clients pay for the time they spend with me, and they lose out if they turn up late or miss an appointment.   I make it very clear to them upfront that it’s their responsibility to be on time, and if they want to cancel or reschedule they need to give me at least 24 hours notice.  What’s great is that in 5 years of business, I can count on one hand how many people have failed to meet these terms, and that’s out of hundreds of clients that I’ve worked with.  This doesn’t really surprise me though because these are people who are committed to a process, and want to get the most out of the time they have with me.  They give their coaching sessions respect, which is ultimately a reflection of the value they place on their time and mine.

Imagine if you had the same mindset for everything you did.  If you always wanted to get the most out of every hour or day, what would you be doing differently?

If you’re not giving your time the attention it deserves it’s important to look at why.  Perhaps you’re self-sabotaging, maybe you’re afraid of what might happen if you truly committed to something, or possibly you’re just sitting in your comfort zone finding it easier to whinge than to take action.  Either way, your relationship with time directly correlates to how satisfied you feel in life and the results you get.  After all, no-one every felt great about a lifetime wasted!

So take a moment now to think about where you’re wasting time, and why? Then decide if you’re committed to the task – if you are, start showing your time the respect it deserves, and if you’re not – move on.
