Wouldn’t it be good if getting rid of stress was as easy as spraying a blast of household cleaner? Well in some cases the solution isn’t that far removed. Some things in our lives are simply irritating toleration’s that can be eliminated with the same level of ease as giving your desk a quick clean! Don’t believe me? Let me show you how in 3 easy steps…
Everyone tolerates ‘stuff’ but just like a snowball scooting down a mountain, the more we tolerate the bigger the impact each tiny toleration can have, until sometimes we find ourselves putting up with far more than we can mentally or physically deal with.
Toleration’s can be a mere niggle in our existence through to a right royal pain in the backside. Either way it’s important to recognise what we’re unnecessarily putting up with and do something about it asap.
The impact of living with toleration’s can be costly. They can push your stress levels through the roof, reduce your productivity and ability to reach your goals, pilfer you of energy and enthusiasm, and even cause you to feel anger and resentment. All nasty symptoms that are often completely avoidable.
So what can you do to stop this dirty bug from taking hold? Follow these 3 simple steps to get your toleration’s under control today…
Step 1: Identify Your Tolerations
Grab a pen and paper and write down at least 20 things that you are currently tolerating. Here are some ideas….
Your list can encompass ANYTHING that isn’t quite working for you in your personal and professional life. Consider your office, career, business, family, finances, lifestyle and relationships. Nothing is off-limits as toleration’s can take hold in all aspects of life.
Step 2. Commit To Saying Goodbye
Some toleration’s will have benefits as well as costs, so you need to be honest with yourself about which ones you truly want to eliminate. For example, the benefit of putting up with a job you hate could be that you don’t have to invest time and energy into doing something about it, and putting yourself out of your comfort zone. Similarly, leaving your email inbox in a state of chaos may allow you to feel busy when in fact you’re being unproductive and unfocused.
If you really want to get the most out of this exercise you MUST be honest with yourself about which toleration’s you are truly committed to wiping out. And for those that you are happy to put up with, ask yourself why? What is the cost to you of keeping that toleration in your life?
Go through your list and highlight which toleration’s you are committed to letting go of.
Step 3. Exterminate, Exterminate, Exterminate….
Just like an episode of Dr Who, once you’ve decided to make a change it’s time to send in the daleks and start obliterating your chosen toleration’s once and for all. By deciding to take action you have committed to either eliminating some level of pain that you’re currently experiencing OR instead choosing to focus on what your future will look like without that toleration in it. Whatever your decision, choosing to take responsibility for the quality of your life is a key step forward.
When eliminating your toleration’s make sure you get rid of the source as well as the current problem. So if you’re tolerating bad time management for example, don’t just tidy up your inbox and get your diary up to scratch – make sure you put systems in place so that the same issues don’t arise again.
Let the people around you know what you’re doing as added accountability always helps maintain the conviction and motivation to make long-lasting changes, and also be mindful that you don’t need to wait for a big list of toleration’s to build up before you do something about them. Get into the habit of dealing with toleration’s as they appear so that you keep your stress levels as low as possible.
Just like spring-cleaning, ridding your day of toxic toleration’s can give your mind a refreshing over-haul that will help to increase your levels of energy, motivation and productivity. Take action today by saying goodbye to all the niggly little things you’ve been putting up with – and remember, some of them can be as easy as cleaning your desk – BAM ….. and the dirt is gone!
