Are You An Idea Waster?

Published: December 6, 2011

I’ve come across a couple of people recently who I know are capable of great things, but interestingly they’re stalling.  They’re full of smart, viable ideas with the aptitude to see them through but for some reason they’re holding back despite feeling frustrated and seemingly chomping at the bit for change.  I’m sure they’re not alone in feeling this way so what can you do if you’re sitting around, wasting great ideas?

How To Make The Magic Happen

Steve Jobs once said…

“Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.”

The inspiring thing about this quote is that 1) it’s true and 2) it gives you permission to stop waiting to come up with a genius idea or something that’s going to change the world and instead, simply take action on something that you think could make life easier or more enjoyable.

All too often perfectionism holds many of us back.  We’re so desperate to dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’ that we literally come to a grinding halt and do nothing with the ideas that have been swirling around inside our heads.

There’s also the dreaded fear of failure.  What if we put our ideas ‘out there’ and they don’t work?  Or what if someone thinks they’re silly?

The problem is that by being a perfectionist, or being so risk-adverse that you do nothing ‘in case’ it doesn’t work out, means you’ll literally find yourself stuck in a rut forever more.  All of your great ideas will go to waste, or even more agonisingly painful, you’ll probably find that someone else come up with a similar idea but actually do something about it.  Ouch.

So what ideas have you been holding on to, frightened to take a chance? Pick the idea you’re most passionate about, break it down into small, manageable pieces, and take one small step forward TODAY.  By making each action easy and palatable, all of a sudden your ideas will become more achievable than ever before.

Remember, life is too short for regrets, and great ideas are too precious to waste.  Steve Jobs is a great example of how he turned an idea turned into someone life changing for many of us, but he wasn’t searching for a ‘life changing idea’, he was just trying to make things better and easier.  Readjust your thinking, take the pressure off, and get to work!

The latest idea I’m working on that I’ve ‘put out there’ is Busy Working Mumma – it’s taking courage, and it’s definitely not risk-free, but it’s exciting and I’m confident that pushing my comfort zone and doing something I love will pay-off one way or another!  Post a comment below and let me know what idea you’re going to start work on today…

Faye – I have about six awesome ideas every couple of weeks. Why do they never get any traction? I rarely have time to work on them.
Am I not prioritising them well enough? Possibly….but financial security (read heart-stopping mortgage payments) is at the heart of my biggest fear, therefore my day job saps all my energy, and most of my time, leaving me deflated and I look on my ideas and plans as just some form of adult fantasy and escapism rather than a better life I could be living.

So my ideas are really just hopes!

Just realised how bloody sad that all sounds!
