Forget spiders, one of the biggest fears people have is a fear of failure. The angst associated with this fear can be completely debilitating, stopping you achieve your goals and aspirations time and time again, and preventing you from achieving your full potential.
Sadly most people hold themselves back and don’t achieve a fraction of what they’re capable of because they’re scared to get it wrong and potentially ‘fail’. However The Law Of Feedback states that there is no failure, only feedback, and this mentality is what sets successful people apart from those who have let themselves come to a grinding halt thanks to fear.
Successful people realise that the mistakes they make simply help build their experience and knowledge, helping them grow and develop further every time, whereas people who have an ingrained fear of failure often perceive their mistakes as personal and permanent.
If you want to make sure you’re moving yourself forward and getting the results you want follow these 5 key steps:-
Step 1: Take Action
Being immobilised by fear will get you nowhere. It’s important to get the cogs turning, and DO SOMETHING to move you closer to your goals, no matter how small that action is. Ideally, choose this moment to do something brave and bold as this will significantly change your neurological pathways – the way your brain’s wired – and will help you build immediate momentum and motivation.
Ask yourself: What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Then choose one simple step to move you closer to that goals and take action today. Not tomorrow, not next week – today!
Step 2: Show Resilience and Persistence
Think of someone you admire who’s successful – did they give up to get where they are today? Of course not. Successful people keep trying different approaches to get where they want to be, and display resilience to achieve their desired results. To overcome a fear of failure you MUST try and try again when you come against inevitable hurdles. The people who get what they want in life don’t give up when the going gets tough!
Step 3: Do It Differently
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Surprisingly, even though this is common knowledge it’s amazing how many people keep doing what they’ve always done and still expect a different outcome! If you want results, you have to open and willing to keep trying different approaches. What can you do differently today that will change the results you’ve been experiencing until now?
Step 4: Stop Taking It Personally
If something goes wrong and you don’t get the results you were looking for don’t take it personally. Failure is about outcomes and results, not personal characteristics, but unfortunately too many people equate a mistake as a personal failure – it’s not. Make a conscious decision to change the way you think and stop using a misused equation as an excuse to give up – mistakes do not make you a failure.
Step 5: Learn And Move On!
It’s important to learn from your mistakes, but it’s also important to take those lessons on board and then MOVE ON! Don’t dwell on what’s happened, simply realise why it happened, what you could have done differently and how you can do it better next time, and then pick yourself up and get back on track. Overanalysing and giving yourself a hard time achieves nothing – the mistake is simply an event, and one which is now over!
