3 Reasons Why Your Life Needs A Theme

It’s that time of year when we’re bombarded with a 101 blog posts about goal setting.  SHOOT ME NOW!

I’ll ‘fess up instantly and admit that I’ve written a library full of goal setting articles, all of which are incredibly awesome.  Yes, you read that right!

BUT over the course of this year I decided to do things differently, and because it’s worked out really well for me I reckon you might enjoy a dose of this too…

So what did I do that was such a change from the norm?  It’s simple – I chose a theme.

Much like a kids party, I thought about how I wanted my year to shape up, chose a word that resonated with that (= theme) and then I splashed that theme all over this year with my actions.

My theme was DISRUPT.

This was shocking to many because picking a theme is all about creating that feeling in your life.  So focusing on disruption, some would say, has a lot of negative connotations.

But not for me.

I love the word disrupt.  It feels bold and powerful and purposeful.  There’s no messing around, wondering or faffing.  To me it’s about doing, committing, and importantly – change.

So in living my theme, I’ve spent the last 12 months disrupting a lot in my life.  Not because I was unhappy or needed significant change, but because I didn’t want to accept the ‘norm’ and instead wanted to challenge my status quo.

I disrupted:-

  • my home:  My husband and I have spent 6 months doing major renovations this year, and when you work from home that’s a lot of disruption!
  • my business:  I launched a new business in addition to Outshine Consulting, and threw myself into it 110%
  • my education:  I embarked on the most intensive learning I’ve ever done, and fully immersed myself in a program which has been ground-breaking, challenging, stressful, confronting and so very, very enlightening.  That’s a rollercoaster of emotions my friend!
  • my health:  I won’t lie – all of the above took it’s toll on the level of R&R I’ve had in my life this year.  I haven’t looked after myself as much as I should so there’s some work to be done next year!
  • my hair:  I had it all cut off #majordisruption !  OK, so now this post is starting to sound like I’m having a mid-life crisis, but don’t worry, I did that when I was 28 years old.  This disruption was purely to look younger and it worked (cough)!

So with all of that under my belt, what’s my focus for 2017 I hear you ask?

Good question.  Let me enlighten you … my theme for the new year is: Connect

Given that I’ve disrupted everything this year, and it’s been pretty epic on many levels, I’ve decided the new year needs a slightly – let’s say – more gentle approach.

So in 2017 I want to: –

  • connect with my purpose – that has always sounded so fluffy to me, but now I’ve nailed my ‘why’ I’m on a mission to really live it, and that purpose is the foundation that Outshine has been built on.  More to come on that next year!
  • connect with my husband – we’ve survived the reno’s, but far out, it’s been exhausting, so now it’s time to reconnect and put some ‘quality’ back into our relationship instead of time just passing us by and existing – life’s too short for that right?
  • connect with my kids – it can be easy to be busy and disconnected, and I’ve been guilty of just going through the motions, so now it’s time to be a more present parent.
  • connect with my tribes – I flippin’ love the super-smart career and business brains that are members of the Outshine community, and I’m totally invested in their success so this 2017 is about building even stronger connections with them and putting the programs that they’re in on steroids – which is going to be epic, even if I do say so myself!
  • connect with ME – ironically I’ve put this last (as so many career climbers do!) but it actually needs to come first.  I want to connect with my health and wellbeing, and stop taking it for granted.  I’m not getting any younger so it’s time to fit in the ‘big rocks’ of my nutrition and exercise first and foremost so that I can look after the rest even better than I have this year.

So that’s my theme laid out all naked and vulnerable, and I’m really excited about it.

Which is exactly how you should feel about your theme.  It’s something you’re going to live and breathe for a year, so make sure it really resonates with you and that you’re inspired by the ultimate outcome because at times it might test your commitment – disruption certainly did for me!

SO that’s a lot about my experience with living a theme, but why should you be picking a theme? Here are 3 key benefits that I know you’ll love:-

  • It keeps you focussed:  even if you forget your goals or take a day off from chasing them, you can easily stay focused on one overriding word that can help drive your life in the right direction every single day.
  • It’s easier to stick to:  even if you feel like abandoning your goals, theme’s don’t have such heavy expectations or long to-do lists so you’re much more likely to stay committed
  • It will help you make decisions more easily:  when you’ve got a tricky decision to make check to see whether it will help or hinder living your theme.  You picked that word for a reason, so if it goes against the grain, it’s probably not helping you move forward in the way you wanted

You’re sold right?  Of course you are.

So what’s your theme going to be?  Post a comment below … you know mine so it’s only fair we trade right?

P.S.  You still need goals to create a career you love, but a theme adds a whole new layer to make the year even more interesting!
