Why You Need To Think Bigger Than 2016

This is not another blog post about new years resolutions (hooray!).  Don’t get me wrong, I love a good goal and get excited about this time of year as it feels fresh, new, and full of possibility.  But as 95% of people fail to achieve their resolutions, it’s also a time that can be laden with frustration, doubt and overwhelm if the prior year didn’t quite work out as you’d planned, or if time seems to be passing you by with no real sense of achievement or progress.

It’s important – paramount in fact – to have a clear sense of direction in your life if you want to keep moving forward.  But there are many problems associated with new year resolutions, and the one I want to focus on right now is the premise that all things worthwhile have to be achieved in the next 12 months…

As best-selling author Bradley Trevor Greive said in this months edition of The Collective: –

“Thinking big often means thinking long term.  Don’t be afraid to start an important project that may take more than a year to complete – and don’t delay.  Anything worth investing a significant part of your life in is worth starting today.”

If you’re purely planning around the next 12 months you might be missing out on important steps that are required to help you build the career, business or life you want long term.  Sure, focusing on a shorter time frame can help build impetus and momentum, but it can also act as a hurdle that needs to be overcome later on in the year if the time frame you set in January was too aggressive or unrealistic.

So of course, go ahead and work out what you want the next 12 months to look like, but I also encourage you to plan beyond that point and break free of the typical calendar constraints that so many people fall into at this time of the year.  Also be super-smart with your planning so that you set yourself up for success instead of becoming yet another new years resolution statistic!

When you’re clear on what you want, how you’re doing to get it, and have a step-by-step plan that’s realistic, ticking off the things you want most in your personal and professional life gets a whole lot easier!
