Why Goals Are Pointless

Did you know that 95% of people don’t achieve their new year resolutions!  If you made a pact with yourself recently to lose weight, get fit, stop smoking, or something a little less cliche, you may already be another statistic.  So why is it that, despite wanting something so much, most people fall by the wayside before January is even half-way through?  Let me explain…

It Takes More

Let me start by saying that having a goal is an important step forward, so if you DID set a new years resolution then you are still one step ahead of the game by at least thinking about what you want.  However, despite what some motivational books might suggest, just thinking about something a lot is NOT enough to make it happen!

It’s important to take time out to consider what you want to achieve in life, but having a set of well-thought-out goals written down isn’t enough to make sure they happen.  Just like the clock striking midnight won’t ensure you have an amazing year, committing to a goal without a strategy won’t ensure you actually achieve your dreams and aspirations.

The critical ingredient in making your goals a reality is to have a clear and timely action plan figured out that will help you get from where you are now, to where you want to be.  Without a plan, your goals are essentially a dream rather than a reality.

Having a plan of attack is an easy component that way too many people forget to think about, and one that plays a significant role in how successful you are when it comes to achieving your goals.

If you want to make sure you’re not another statistic follow these 3 easy steps:-

1.  Write down your goals: What do you want to achieve this year in your personal and professional life?  Consider your career, relationships, health and well-being, and finances.

2.  Devise a plan of action: Consider the end-result you’re looking for, and then work back, writing down every step you need to take to achieve your goal.  Break your goal down into as many steps as you can – this will make achieving your goals much easier.

3.  Diarise your plan: Don’t leave your plan up to fate – write in your diary specifically when you are going to carry out each step and then stick to your plan.

Action is key, so stay focused on your plan, and take consistent action to achieve it.  You might come up against roadblocks that slow you down or change the shape of your goal, but by following a strategy and taking small steps every day, you WILL eventually reach the end result you’re looking for.
