How To Be More Productive, Lose Weight And Drink Less…

I’ve just returned from Fiji which was quite an education for someone who spends most of her time running around, doing everything at break-neck speed. As soon as your plane lands ‘Fiji Time’ kicks in and you’re forced to adjust to a much slower pace of life.  Interestingly, this relaxed culture seemed to rub off onto everyone around me, including myself, and it got me thinking about how the same strategy can help us get more done in less time, lose weight faster and drink less…

Be A Sponge

As I’ve mentioned before, you are a reflection of the 5 people you spend most of your time with, but I believe this philosophy extends much wider and can be used to help us achieve our most important goals more effectively.

In the case of Fiji, you’re forced to slow down and relax because practically everyone around you is doing the same thing, and before you know it the wonderfully friendly culture and chilled-out way of life becomes ‘the norm’.  All of a sudden everyone’s saying ‘Bula’, Fijian or not, and your usual hurried pace of life has slowed down considerably.

So how can you take this approach and use it to achieve your goals more effectively ? Picture this …. you want to be more productive in your job, but you’re surrounded by time-wasters or plodders who are happy achieving mediocre.  What happens?  Their mentality and the environment you’re spending your time in rubs off on you.  You can fight it, and you might win, but it certainly makes it harder for you to be more productive when everyone around you is doing the opposite.

Similarly, if you want to get ahead in your career but spend a lot of time with people who aren’t career-focused or ambitious their approach will rub off on you, meaning that you will either let your career take a backseat or you will have to fight harder to keep yourself on track and motivated.

If you want to achieve your goals in the most effective way possible you must surround yourself with like-minded people who will reinforce your mentality and motivation.  Consider this….

  • Do you want to lose weight or exercise more? Spend time with people who are healthy and active rather than couch potatoes who live on takeaway
  • Do you want to drink less? Change your social circle so that the things you do don’t center around bars and clubs
  • Do you want to be more positive? Choose to spend time with people who are upbeat and happy and leave the whingers behind

This is a simple approach but hugely effective when you are smart about who you spend your time with.  Choose the right people, culture and environment, and you WILL achieve your goals more quickly and effectively.

What changes are you going to make to help you achieve your goals faster? Post a comment below and let me know….

P.S.  I hope you like the photo I took (top of page) … this Fijian guys looks pretty relaxed to me!

    Dear Faye,
Once again you are posting the right text in the right time. Thank you so much for this!
Moreover, you also gave me an idea to discover Fiji…
Actually, today is my first day after two weeks of driving across the beautiful Italy, meeting friends, enjoying wonderful weather and such lovely food.
Now, I really have to reboost myself and regain my cruise speed.
First action taken: in order to loose additional kilos accumulated during my holiday, today I fought my post holiday laziness and went to gym during my lunchtime (yes!).
Now I need to stick to “positive thinkers” and effective “goals achievers” to regain my belief that I will move forward with my career and actually do it.
    Very warmly, Joanna
