If you’ve ever considered a career as a Recruitment Consultant, or are simply sick of bad service and want to show the rest of the world how it should be done, then Aaron Fuller is one man worth checking out.  He’s setting out to change the face of recruitment as we know it, and with a background in financial services and analytics, combined with a passion for the environment and a Master in Business he’s certainly got some interesting skills up his sleeve!

Professional Profile

  • Name: Aaron Fuller
  • Job: Recruitment Consultant and Business Owner
  • Company: Shiftlock

What is your current occupation?

A human, being. That is my job title. I own a new type of recruitment agency, Shiftlock that specialises in Business Intelligence, Analytics & Data.  The Shiftlock difference is we invest in the candidates and clients we work with through a leadership program.

We find the best talent and help them become the best version of themselves.  Good for the employee, the employer & for Shiftlock.

What were you doing before you started your current job/business?

I spent the last decade working between Analytics for IAG & HSBC, as well as a bit of sustainability consulting back in 2006/2007 when Green was the new black (ahh, the good old days). I went back to university in 2007 to complete my masters in Business & Environment, and I’m still passionately involved in many not-for-profit campaigns aimed at changing the way we live to leave the planet in a better state than when we inherited it.

How did you make the move into your current position?

In 2009, I was one of 25 Australians to be accepted into a fellowship with the Centre For Sustainability Leadership (www.csl.org.au). The course aims to find people who care, and help them become leaders that can make a difference (after trying to find people in positions of leadership and making them care didn’t work). The course was really focused on social change, courageous leadership and providing the tools and skills required to be an influencer in our communities to drive positive change.

The course provided us with business coaching, life coaching & mentoring, as well as access to Australia’s leaders in change management, social change & activism.

In addition to being fed up dealing with recruiters as a manager looking for staff, and as a potential candidate looking for new roles, I was disgusted with the lack of “human-ness” shown by the industry, and the fact none of the recruiters had worked in Analytics & Business Intelligence.

So, Shiftlock was born in 2009. A mix of frustration, the urge to do it better than everyone else, and add a new dimension to the offering by providing a 12 month leadership course to each new candidate, paid for by Shiftlock.

The business model is true to my core values, in not being greedy, giving what I can, and helping people become the best version of themselves. I provide coaching, mentoring & course-ware to all new employees, aligned to the core KPI’s of each role.

I am happy to be the annoying thorn on every other recruiters side, by offering more & charging less.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Still in start up mode, naturally, much of my day is spent in generating leads, meeting potential candidates & clients, pitching Shiftlock to the decision makes, working out tactics to get on the panel of preferred recruiters in the large companies.

Researching local, national  & international trends in the analytics industry, keeping track of people moving roles, touching base with & growing my network. Looking for new ways to provide value to the 40,000 business analysts in Sydney.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the fact I am shaking up the way recruitment is not just perceived, but done. I believe there is no substitute for integrity & honesty, and I am passionate about treating people like people.

I love that I can refuse business with clients who see no value in the leadership program that Shiftlock offer. It is nice to be able to be selective around the company I keep, the companies I do business with.

I love helping people become the best version of themselves. It is very rewarding & fulfilling.

I am also very focused on volunteering and working on other projects that are very removed from recruitment, but are close to my heart, such as toilet paper. Yes, that’s right. I have launched a campaign that aims to eradicate the use of non-recycled toilet paper in Australia by 2015.  Currently, 95% of toilet paper sold is from old growth or managed forests. 270,000 trees a day cut down just to make toilet paper. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

I am comfortable with the lead generation & sales part of recruitment.  The most challenging part is meeting really great people, who are looking for work, fed up with traditional recruiters, and desperate for a new role.

Having a pool of potential employees who want to add value in a new job, but having nothing to offer them is hard.  It is hard, because it is easy to develop a good working relationship with people, and the feeling that I am letting them down, or unable to help makes me feel out of my comfort zone.

However, I know this is just part & parcel of my role.

What are the top 3 pieces of advice you would give someone considering following your footsteps?

  • Create, don’t compete (& read Blue Ocean Strategy)
  • Don’t be afraid of giving it a go. Don’t die wondering
  • Know what your life’s work is, and do it.  If you don’t know, don’t stop trying to find out.  The answer already exists inside you.
