Most people are poor listeners and if we’re honest with ourselves we’re often just waiting for our chance to talk rather than focusing on what the other person is saying. By keeping quiet and then only asking questions when the other person has finished talking you’ll find more people are keen to chat to you because you’ll make them feel important and valued.

Everyday life can feel like a competition at times – from racing to get a parking spot through to chasing promotion or trying to beat your competitors in business. This competitive streak can filter into your relationships and before you know it you’re ‘competing’ in conversations by pointing out when someone’s done something wrong or topping another person’s story with your own amazing anecdotes. If you find yourself getting a tad competitive it’s time to stop, focus on the other person and graciously listen. By doing this you will also reduce the urge the other person has to try and beat you in the conversation! This in turn will build rapport and forge tighter relationships.
