Are you clear on where you’re heading in your career? Or is the path a bit foggy right now?
And how do you think you’ll feel in 1, 3, 5 years time when you look back on professional life – will you be satisfied and fulfilled with the progress you’re making right now, or a bit disappointed that you’re not quite where you’d hoped you would be?
In this short video I share with you why we ALL need a career plan, and the questions you need to ask yourself to get one started…
Prefer to read rather than watch? No problem….
I’m going to be really honest with you – I’m a bit sick today.
There’s no makeup, I haven’t really done my hair. Probably not the best day to be running a video for you, but I don’t like excuses, and that’s why I figured it was more important to do this video for you than to fall into the trap of dealing with my limitations around whether I can get on video without makeup or not!
The reason I’m doing this video is to continue with my 10 week celebrating 10 years of Outshine’s birthday celebrations. I was thinking about what I wanted to give you this week, and what I decided was that I really wanted to talk about getting a career plan in place, because I ran a presentation and was a speaker at an event this week. What was interesting is, that in a room of 40 senior leaders only one person put their hand up when I asked who had a career plan!
To be honest I was bit floored by that.
I wasn’t expecting that response at all. I was expecting at least half of those hands to go up. It’s really got me thinking about how so many people don’t invest the time, energy, and effort required to build themselves a career roadmap so that they know where they’re going and how they’re going to get there.
So today this video is a little bit of butt kick, because I’m on this video with no excuses… I don’t look to pretty, it’s not the best branding for my business, but I’m not going to let that stop me getting this important message out to you.
I don’t want you to let a perceived lack of time and energy stop you from building your career. If you want to move forward, onwards, and upwards in your career regardless of whatever direction that is, it is imperative you know where you’re heading and you have a clear plan of attack and strategy – month by month – on what actions you need to take to get there, and how you’re actually going to do that.
I want you to do one thing today, and that’s the purpose of this video. It’s to sit down and map out where you want to see your career in 12 months time.
I want you to imagine that I’m your fairy godmother. I’m waving my magic wand, you can have anything you want in the next 12 months as long as you believe it’s a possibility.
I want you to write down what you want life to look like in 12 months time. Consider: –
Then also think outside of your career.
Consider all the things that are important to you, so you can build a holistic roadmap of where you want your personal and professional life to go. Then start to work out step by step what actions you need to take to get to that point.
Once you’re clear on the vision you then need to re-engineer what needs to happen to get to that end goal.
So, it’s not good enough to just have the vision clear. You need to have the steps in place to get there. What I would love you to do is commit to being accountable today, and to start building yourself a career roadmap, because if I’m speaking to you at any point in the future – and I ask you that question, who here has a career plan? – I want you to be one of those people that can confidently put your hand up and say yes I have.
I hope this has been useful for you. Thank you for helping me celebrate Outshine’s 10 years of success. We’ve still got a few more weeks to go, so there’s lots more birthday goodies coming your way!
