Why Talent Is Overrated

There are some obvious examples in life where talent is a major bonus and I think we would agree that where singing is concerned being a ‘natural’ is a big plus!  But unless you’re aiming to be the next  pop sensation, I’m pleased to announce that talent really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and with the right mindset you can far-exceed those who have abilities that appear to come naturally.  Here’s how…

Which One Are You?

I had the pleasure of listening to Australian marketing guru Siimon Reynolds speak at the Ultimate Success Summit recently, and he raised an excellent point regarding the limitations ‘talented’ people can have.  You see, when you’re talented you can fall into the trap of believing that talent is everything, and as a result ONLY doing on what you’re really good at.

Quite often a fear of looking bad or failing can stop talented people moving out of their comfort zone and trying something new, and as a result they only focus on what they know because they can’t bear to run the risk of not being the seen as the best or top of the league.  Reynolds calls this the ‘fixed mindset’.

On the flip, you’ve got a ‘growth mindset’.  The people who fit into this group are those who are addicted to learning and life-long development, and who are always pushing the boundaries of what they know and do.  The major benefit of this mindset is that in most cases you can catch-up to – and overtake – someone with talent.  The reason being is that you don’t need talent to get ahead in you career, you simply need to WANT to learn, develop and grow.

Depending on your thirst for personal development, your eagerness to learn, and your enthusiasm for getting outside of your comfort zone, you can leapfrog ahead of those who are cruising along resting on their loral’s and assuming that natural talent is going to propel them up the career ladder.

By embracing a growth mindset and a love of learning you can open up many opportunities fundamental to career success.  Whereas a fixed mindset limits the options available to you and ultimately closes doors in your personal and professional life.

So which category do you fall into? Are you constantly looking to grow and develop your skills, or have you been relying on your talents and sitting in your comfort zone for a little bit too long?  Be honest with yourself, and put a plan in place today that will move you from complacency to growth.
