What To Do When Your Creative Genius Is Stuck

I hate that feeling when you’re sat at your desk, staring at your computer screen, hoping that something new and inspiring will pop out of the white abyss staring back at you when you’re feeling creatively challenged!  It can feel totally overwhelming, especially if there’s a deadline approaching and you’re under the pump to write a new program, solve a problem for a client, or any task that requires your creative genius to wake up and spring into action.  It’s also sods-law that the more you think about it and the more you hope it’ll happen, the more blocked your head becomes.  So what do you do if there’s no time to play with and you can’t just run away and escape the stuckness?

5 Tips To Get Unstuck

I love the creative license my job gives me, and for the best part I thrive on the challenge of coming up with new ideas and ways of thinking for my business and my clients.  But sometimes, just like anyone, I get stuck and in most cases I don’t have the luxury of time to just sit it out and wait for a light bulb moment to happen.

So when my creative genius has gone wandering, this is what I do to get her back: –

  • Phone a friend:  Picking up the phone and speaking to someone who’s upbeat, inspiring, full of ideas and makes you laugh is a great state-breaker and can help change your mindset instantly.  Find your go-to person and tap in to their energy and enthusiasm – it’s normally contagious!
  • Draw a mindmap: Forget lined paper and black pens, draw yourself a quick and easy mindmap with some colourful markers, and break the task you’re trying to complete down into teeny tiny pieces – this will help you get a new perspective and also realise that the big problem or task you’re stuck on is actually made up of much smaller, more manageable components which are often much easier to approach, and conquer!
  • Exercise:  If you’re under the pump time-wise it may feel counter intuitive to walk away from your desk but sometimes that’s the only solution, and exercise is a really effective way to get your neurological pathways fired up to think differently.  You don’t need to find an hour to go for a run – just a 10 minute walk around the block can help significantly.
  • Communicate:  Sometimes we get stuck because we simply don’t have the knowledge required to move forward with an idea.  So if you’re going over and over the same problem in your head without resolution, or you just can’t work out how to make an idea a reality, seek advice and open up the lines of communication asap.  Just a quick conversation with an expert, or someone that’s done what you’re trying to do before, can be the nudge you needed to get you going again.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Ask This:  I’ve got this question written up on my whiteboard next to my computer – “What would the person I want to be do right now?”.  It challenges my thinking every single day, and helps me approach problems, tasks and goals with a different mindset.  If I’m stuck it gets me out of my own head and into someone else’s, which is a quick way to start thinking differently and escape the stuckness of overwhelm and frustration.  It also helps me take my thinking and ideas up a notch or two!
