My physio is a very brave man. When I saw him yesterday he gave me some advice that I found confronting and many friends disagreed with. It was one of those topics that most people steer away from, and he certainly took a risk with his recommendation! But if I’m honest I know his advice was spot on, and importantly all of us can benefit from it when it comes to career and business growth. So here’s the brutal truth…
With only two weeks to go until my first marathon, and with a few injuries in tow, I went to see my physio where I endured an hour of pain comparable to childbirth! After that, I asked him what he thought my best plan of action would be over the next two weeks to be in tip-top shape and his answer surprised me. He said very simply “Faye, the best thing you can do is lose weight”. See, I told you he was brave….
I was expecting recommendations of extra visits or a massage perhaps, but not to be told to shed even more kilos. So I laughed, and so did he – but he was deadly serious. And then he explained his answer….
You see, elite marathon runners weight around 45kgs. They’re super-lean and super-fast. I, on the other hand, weight an extra 20 and when you think about carrying around that additional weight when you’re running for 4.5 hours, over 42.2kms, that’s a LOT of extra pressure the body has to deal with. So when you put his comments into perspective, its smart advice. The less I weigh, the easier the marathon will be.
The same goes for your career and business. If you’re carrying around more ‘fat’ than you need, it’s going to slow you down and make you less efficient. It doesn’t mean you can’t function, or achieve your goals, but there are ways that will make the journey faster and more enjoyable. Here are some examples of extra career kilo’s you may be carrying: –
It can feel quite confronting to be told that you need to ‘loose the extra kilos’ in any capacity, but when you drop that additional weight and realise you can achieve your goals more easily and effectively you’ll be glad you did. I’ve shed many of these weights during my corporate career and also as a business owner, and the effort is definitely worth the pay-off.
