The Glue That Holds It All Together

There are many elements that go into the mix to make a great career and life, but there’s one special ingredient that’s critical to success regardless of what you’re striving to achieve.  Unfortunately for me, that key ingredient was missing last week and I didn’t like the outcome – here’s what happened…

Downward Spiral

As my clients will tell you, my favourite all-time saying that I live by is: –

Ordinary things, consistently done, produce extraordinary results

These 7 words have transformed my business and saved me from personal overwhelm on many occasions.  But there’s one word that’s way more important that the other 6 and that’s my good friend consistency.

Last week, that critical ingredient was missing for me, and I’ve paid the price.  It’s got nothing to do with my career or business, but the learning’s can be applied to each and every one of us without exception.

As many of you already know, I’m running my first marathon in July so I’m busy following a strict training plan.  Unfortunately I hit my first hurdle last week with some foot injuries that stopped me running.  I’m getting treatment and know what I need to do to get back on track, but that meant no running for a week and the result wasn’t pretty – a short run 7 days later that should have been easy, was a mental battle as well as a physically uncomfortable one.  I felt as though my ability went backwards by weeks, and was really disappointed with how hard the run was.  The whole experience was also a 39 minute reminder that consistency really does pay dividends.

Now in this context it was important for me to rest as I’m injured, BUT when you apply this same tactic to your career, growth and development, and professional success there’s no reason why you should ever stop being consistent in your efforts or take time off.

When you stop, dabble, and dip in and out instead of chipping away on a regular basis, it impacts the outcome you get after each subsequent attempt, and of course takes much more time to reach the end goal you’re aiming for.

It also plays with your mind as you run the risk of getting frustrated with a lack of results, reduce your level of job satisfaction due to poor productivity, and potentially give up on your goal altogether because it feels insurmountable.

Consistency however, is the glue that holds your mind and actions together, and contributes to that fantastic feeling of achievement and fulfilment that keeps you moving forward.  The wonderful thing is, it doesn’t matter how big the steps you’re taking are, consistency keeps you progressing and that’s what fuels your motivation levels and subsequent actions.

It’s also important to recognise that consistency has nothing to do with perfection.  When I’m back up and running to the level I want, I know that some runs will be great and others terrible – just like we all have good and bad days.  But working consistently towards your goals means that all is not lost on those down days, and that each week you’ve made some level of progress despite the challenges you may have faced.

By having a clear career plan, and breaking down your monthly goals into manageable and realistic steps, you can keep advancing forward with consistent effort.
