The First Step You Must Take To Transform Your Career

If you want to get ahead in your career there’s one key area you MUST master.  Forget updating your resume, building a strong professional network, or wowing recruiters – granted, they’re all important building blocks in the career management process, but the linchpin I’m writing today knocks the socks off all of them…

The Key Ingredient

If you truly want to develop your career into one you love you have to master your attitude because your mindset really can make or break achieving that goal.

The best thing you can do when it comes to building and managing your career is maintain a positive and healthy attitude towards your career.  There are SO many other elements involved in career change and management, but attitude is the one thing that you should give the greatest level of focus and attention to because it will have the biggest impact on the results you experience.

When it comes to your career, it’s not just your talent but also your attitude that counts!  Maintaining a positive attitude is a critical ingredient as it allows you to think constructively, find solutions, and maintain important relationships.  Unfortunately this is one aspect that’s often considered the least despite it being the most important.

There are some really good benefits to having a positive and upbeat attitude.  Firstly, a positive attitude makes it easier to do the things that you might be fearful of like contacting new people you don’t know or going to networking events for example, both of which you will probably need to do to advance your career.  Having a positive approach makes critical tasks such as these more palatable and will help ease the temptation to procrastinate over tasks that are fundamental to a successful career.

Secondly, there’s no doubt about it, you are going to need the assistance and advice from many different people as you work on developing your career, and a positive attitude makes you a much more attractive person to deal with!  There’s nothing worse that being approached by or talking to someone who’s down, discouraged, bitter or fearful.  You won’t inspire anyone, least of all yourself.  Someone who is optimistic, upbeat and happy is going to be much more interesting to prospective hiring managers and new networking contacts.

Whether you like it or not, attitude is the primary reason one person gets hired over another with the same skills, so make sure you keep your attitude in check.

Now I fully understand that it’s not always easy to be positive, however there are some simple things you can do to enhance your attitude: –

  • Cut Out The Negative.  Having a positive attitude is KING when it comes to career change, so conspire for your own success by cutting out the number of negative influences you subject yourself to everyday.
  • Exercise: It’s hard to be positive and upbeat when your body is tired and sluggish.  Stop laying around on the couch and instead commit to regular exercise which will help give you a great sense of well-being.  Major career development and career change is like a marathon not a sprint, so you need to put in regular training and effort to get the best results and having an alert body and mind will help you do that.
  • Put Good Stuff In: As the saying goes, ‘Garbage In, Garbage Out”  so commit now to feeding your mind with information that is encouraging and inspiring.
  • Just Do It: Think like Nike and do what you should be doing.   If you feel good about what you’re doing then your attitude will be more positive, whereas if you’re spending your time procrastinating you’re unlikely to feel good about yourself.  If you do what you’re supposed to be doing when it comes to your career, and are taking consistent action, you’ll accomplish more along the way which will not only help to build a more positive attitude, but also help you to reach your career goals.
