Why is it that so often in life we hold to things that don’t benefit us at all despite knowing that we need to ‘let go’ and move on? If you’ve found yourself hanging on to a career that’s been dead in the water for a while, or to old friendships that simply don’t work anymore it’s time to de-clutter and get a fresh perspective on your future.
One of the reasons we hang on to ‘dead wood’ is because it provides us with familiar territory and the safety of our comfort zone. Unfortunately though your comfort zone isn’t always comfortable, and in fact it can actually be very painful at times. Take a toxic relationship for example …. you know it’s bad, you don’t enjoy it, but still you persevere. Is it because you think it will ‘come good’? Probably not. It’s more likely that you stick with the relationship because it’s what you’re used to and dealing with the unknown on many levels can actually be more daunting.
The same goes for your career. How many people do you know that dislike their job but continue to stay in the same rut month after month? They come up with excuses to legitimise why they should stay put, and continue to whinge about how much they hate going to work. But what’s easier – following the same routine they know and hate day after day, or letting go of their comfort zone and doing something about their situation? All too often staying put seems the simpler option. Urgh!
Just like a bad habit, getting out of your comfort zone and letting go of familiar territory can be hard, emotionally taxing, and frankly quite scary at times. It can also be highly rewarding, liberating and invigorating. Getting rid of the muck that’s cluttering your mind and moving on from situations that don’t support and motivate you help you learn, grow and develop.
So what are you holding on to? Consider these options….
Stop the excuses and stories now, and decide what’s NOT working for you. Think about what you DO want and put a plan of action in place to ensure you’re heading in the right direction instead of holding on to things that are no longer working for you.
Think about it this way – you put your rubbish out once a week, you get rid of your household waste during council clean-up’s, you delete your emails regularly, and you chuck out clothes you no longer need. Is all of that really more important than your relationships, job or health? Or course not. So choose to let go and de-clutter they key areas of your life today – your mind will thank you for it!
