How To Stop Wasting Time On Your Job Search

If you feel as though your job search is dragging on it’s important to find ways to stay motivated so that you avoid falling into the trap of losing interest and ending up in a career-rut.  For some people, looking for a new position or changing career can feel like an eternity, but it doesn’t have to be that way.  If you want to get your job search on track here’s how to pick up the pace and manage your time smartly…

3 Daily Steps To Keep Your Job Search Moving

Follow these 3 simple steps daily to keep your job search surging forward…

1.  Start Each Day With A Plan

Treat your job search like a job itself and plan what you need to do to reach your goals.  Every day you should have a list of objectives and appropriate tasks planned to help you achieve them.  Just like any regular job, you need to know what your purpose is to be able to plan your day effectively.

Ask yourself every morning “What are my job-search objectives today?”

Perhaps you want to…

  • secure an interview
  • meet with a recruiter
  • send an application off
  • review on-line job boards
  • update your social media profiles
  • join some new groups on LinkedIn
  • increase your professional network
  • meet a contact for coffee…

This list is by no means exhaustive but you get the idea!   The point is, you need to be clear on what you want to achieve each and every day in order to keep your job search moving forward and to avoid wasting time wondering what to do next – a particularly dangerous scenario if your motivation and energy levels are dipping.

2.  Keep All Cogs Turning

Don’t fall into the trap of focusing on only one or two job search tactics …. to keep your search moving in the right direction you MUST make sure that all of the wheels in the job search process are moving simultaneously.

Just because you’ve registered with 5 recruiters doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be sending out direct applications or increasing your network.  Similarly, relying on on-line job boards is not enough, and spending too much time on social media is not a balanced approach to a smart job search.  You must spend time on all of those tasks to keep your search moving forward.

3.  Keep Learning

There are a tremendous amount of resources available to you, for free, which can help improve your job search success – make sure you use them!

The job market is forever changing, and there is wealth of new tools, books, magazines, websites and other resources available to you which have been designed to help you get ahead in your career.  With all of that at your fingers tips, you only have yourself to blame if you are relying on old techniques and out of date habits to help you find a job.  Learn how to use social media effectively, practice how to manage your time smartly, find out how to network professionally … whatever you choose to do, decide to improve your skills regularly to keep your job hunting mind fresh and current.
