How To Safeguard Your Job

I was talking to a friend over the weekend who mentioned that a scary number of staff were being laid off in the division he works in.  I asked him “Is your job secure?” – his answer hit the nail on the head with some valuable advice that we should all take on board when things are a little uneasy…

Play The Game

One of the secrets to job security, and career success, is to never take your job for granted, even if you have been in your current company for donkey’s years and feel part of the furniture.

Gone are the days where a job was for life, and in a much more transient world it would be foolish to expect long-term security just because you’ve done a good job or have been a valued member of staff.

When asked if his job was secure, my friend said “Yes, but you can’t take that for granted so I’m pulling my head in, playing the game and being political”, meaning that it’s time to shape up, do what’s expected, and pick your battles wisely.

Now is not a time to slack off, do the bare minimum and hope no-one notices.   It’s also not a time to shake things up, get on the wrong side of decision makers, or try and pass the buck.

In an ever-changing market you need to make yourself more valuable than ever by going over and above what is expected, showing commitment, and being the go-to person wherever possible.

Regardless of how secure you feel right now, take a moment to reassess how you are treating your job, and make sure it’s like your best friend and not your enemy.

What are you doing to look after your job and make yourself indispensable? Post a comment below – your advice might help others improve their job security.

Never say “that`s not my job” when asked to do something. If you have the skills and can help, you should. Raise your hand for opportunities to expand your influence and make yourself indispensable. Although nobody is indispensable, if you`re someone who can do 2 to 3 persons job — in a downsizing, you are more likely to be chosen to be retained.
