How To Leave A Powerful First Impression

It doesn’t matter whether you’re on an interview, meeting a client or at a networking event, the people around you will evaluate you within seconds and the impression you make can be nearly impossible to reverse.  We all know first impressions count, but it’s still surprising how many people forget that golden rule when they’re meeting someone for the first time.  So here’s a little refresher with 5 simple tips that you can implement immediately to make sure you don’t fall short when it comes to that all-important first impression…

You Can’t Delete A First Impression

When you meet someone for the first time they will form an opinion of you based on how you look, how you’re dressed, your body language and your mannerisms.  As much as you might not like that, it’s human nature so don’t fight it – instead, work with what you know and make sure the first impression you leave is a positive one.  Here’s how…

1.  Be  On Time

Does anyone really care about your ‘good excuse’ for being late when they’re meeting you for the first time?  No – they’ll just remember that you weren’t on time!  So be prepared and arrive early – without exception.

2.  Dress Appropriately

The reality is that our physical appearance matters.  When you meet someone for the first time they don’t know you so they only have your appearance to base their first impressions on.

The key here is to present yourself appropriately – think about the style of the person you’re meeting and the occasion, and pay attention to your personal grooming.  All of these will help you feel more confident which in turn contributes to a great first impression.

3.  Watch Your Body Language

Your body language speaks louder than words.  In fact, a whopping 55% of the way we communicate is through our physiology, so stand tall, make good eye contact, give a good firm handshake and very importantly, SMILE!

4.  Build Rapport

Small talk goes a long way so plan ahead and think about some of the questions you could ask the people you’re about to meet to keep the conversation flowing.  This also helps reduce nervousness and increase confidence.

5.  Choose Your Attitude

Your attitude is key in everything you do so choose to be positive and even if you’re nervous, learn to maintain an upbeat manner and contribute appropriately to the situation you are in.

Remember, you only have a few seconds to create a great first impression so it’s worth putting in that extra effort as the outcome is almost impossible to change later on.  Whilst none of these points are rocket science, sometimes we just need a little reminder and with some extra effort we can make every first impression a great one!
