How To Avoid Being A Jobsworth

In any job it’s important to know what your goals and objectives are, and a good clear job description will give you exactly that.  However,  if you want to be an outstanding employee or excel in your chosen career, ditching your job description could be just what you need to get ahead faster.  Here’s why….

That’s not my department…

If you’ve ever worked with a ‘Jobsworth‘ you’ll know that they can be frustrating, unhelpful and a real hindrance when it comes to getting work done.

By steadfastly refusing to move outside of their job description, and whinging if they’re asked to do anything over and above ‘the norm’, they are typically seen as plodders who make it easy for their managers to pass them over for promotion.

Conversely, it’s the employee’s who are happy to go above and beyond the call of duty that will readily find themselves getting great appraisal ratings, promotions and salary increases.   Yes, a job description outlines what you need to be doing day to day, but it doesn’t pen you in and give you boundaries you can’t cross.

If you want to get promoted or move ahead in your career, it’s important to be seen as someone who’s willing to go the extra mile and do whatever it takes, regardless of your role or position.

So by all means keep a copy of your job description on file, but don’t let it define you.  Be ‘that person’ who happily puts their hand up to help, jumps in without being asked, and takes on more than they have to.  Your career will thank you for it!

What could you do today that would demonstrate your willingness to help and your eagerness to go beyond your job description? Post a comment below…
