Have you ever cringed at the prospect of putting yourself forward for an award and not winning? Or worse still, have you bypassed the idea altogether to safe face? You’re not alone, and my client was the same. But guess what, she’s a finalist now, and this is how putting yourself out there can benefit you…
I’d like to tell you about Natalie. She’s a superstar client of mine who’s been in business 6 months and asked me one day if I thought it was worth her applying for a regional business award. Of course I said ‘Yes’ – I’m her Coach, you’d expect that right. But she wasn’t convinced.
She ummed and ahhed, positive that she wouldn’t win, and skeptical about whether it was worth the effort. She’s busy, and just like you and me, she hasn’t got time to waste – so educated decisions are pretty important.
But after some persuasive words of wisdom in our coaching session, she got stuck into filling out the forms. It took time and wasn’t an easy process (even for a pro) but at the 12th hour she submitted her application. Not expecting a thing.
And then she got invited to a panel interview. And now she’s a Finalist.
Yep. On Friday she’ll be glammed up, in a room full of inspiring business owners and career-climbers, ready to hear her name and business – Foxed – announced over the loud speaker to room full of hundreds of potential clients and a hugely influential network.
Does it matter if she wins or not? Hell no.
Of course it’s nice to win, but she’s already spent time educating a panel of interviewers about her business; got her name in the local on-line newspaper; and will have her branding and business profiled at a well-respected regional event. That’s winning on it’s own.
So what’s my point today?
It’s simple. If you want to build a strong business or a career you love, show up. Put the effort in, ditch the fear of failure, and get outside of your comfort zone. Put your hand up for stuff you haven’t done before, enter awards, go to events that make you jittery, and raise your brand and profile.
Professional awards are great way of getting your name out there, and being associated with a group that’s highly respected. The rewards from just entering can be huge, and of course, winning is the icing on the cake. But it’s just that – the icing. The cake is still mighty fine on it’s own.
So grab a pen now, head over to google, and research what awards you could apply for in the next 12 months. Download the application form, diarise when entries open, and make sure you’re in the running.
