Get Uncomfortable

You know the reason why most people don’t get the job, career, business, relationship or life they want?  It’s because they’re not willing to get uncomfortable.  Despite saying they want something different, they’re happy sitting tight, putting up with the status quo or drifting along doing what they know.  And if that’s just a teeny bit uncomfortable for you to read now is not the time to stop…

Quit Comfy

Let’s be fair, we ALL like a little bit of comfort in our day.  It’s nice to have familiar surroundings and know what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, and when.  Familiarity is like a warm fluffy blanket – it keeps you protected against the elements and makes the day seems that little bit nicer.

But cosy and comfy and warm and snuggly aren’t words you normally associate with success and achievement.  And that’s because getting anything really worthwhile in life tends to require hard yakka and comes from a place outside of your comfort zone.

Take these 5 common scenario’s for example, that many of my clients come to me struggling with: –

  • Changing career: nothing about changing career is comfortable, but I speak from personal experience that it’s WELL worth it – having  a job you love can really transform your life but you have to push beyond your boundaries to discover what’s really right for you, and then work hard to achieve it.
  • Writing a killer CV: It’s hard work, time consuming and often quite a laborious task – but ask any of my clients who have secured an interview and job through this process, they’ll tell you the pain was worth it!  Taking the easy road and putting in a half-assed effort simply won’t cut the mustard if you want your next job to be a great one.
  • Starting your own business: there’s so much to do, it can be daunting, scary and damn right overwhelming at times – but if you’re destined to be a business owner you’ll never regret making the decision to go it alone.
  • Changing the way you manage your time: killing bad habits and replacing them with new ones can be a real labour of love, and a difficult path to tread – but creating more time in your day is a bonus that’s worth the effort.  It’s far easier to do what you’ve always done, but if you’re sick of running around like a headless chicken with a low level of satisfaction everyday then putting in the effort to manage your time differently will pay off.
  • Presenting to a big group of people: this is a big fear for many and one that most will do their best to bypass – the training alone is generally a test of nerves and resilience! But the buzz when you master being a powerful presenter is amazing, and your career will thank you for it so dealing with the butterflies in your stomach and the demons in your head is a must.

Those are 5 everyday scenarios that require discomfort to get ahead, but the rewards can be huge if you’re willing to push yourself, raise the stress levels a little and learn how to manage your nerves.   The good thing is, that like any habit, the more you get uncomfortable and push your boundaries the easier it becomes!

What do you need to do this week to get uncomfortable and move closer to your most important goals and aspirations? Write down 3 actions that you know need to happen, diarise them right now, and commit to getting uncomfortable – you won’t regret it!
