If you’ve been mulling over the idea of a career change and have been desperately trying to work out ‘what to do next’ for a while, there’s one stumbling block that trips a lot of people up and it’s easily avoidable…
You’ve probably heard somewhere along the line that you should follow your passions if you want to create a career you love. And I agree.
But not entirely.
The problem with passions is it conjures up the notion that you need to focus on things that you absolutely love with all your heart, and are super-enthusiastic about.
But for many people they just can’t conceive the idea that you can find a career that’s so closely aligned with something you have so much interest in. That equation simply feels like a pipe dream and unrealistic. So when they hit that particular career-change roadbump they don’t know how to overcome it, and so quickly give up and stop trying.
I started noticing this many, many years ago when I was coaching clients who wanted to change career, and when I asked them what they were passionate about they 1) struggled to answer the question and 2) couldn’t see the connection between career change and what they were passionate about in their personal life.
So what’s the solution if passions are the key to career satisfaction but sometimes mindset holds you back?
Easy. Forget passions, and focus on what you’re interested in instead.
Mindmap all the topics, areas and industries that float your boat, create some level of interest, and make you want to learn more.
The distinction is slight, but the change in focus can be huge. By forgetting passions we remove the pressure of finding the nirvana of career paths, and instead get you focused on seemingly more attainable options.
The process that I take my clients through combats the mindset barriers to career change, and allows them to fully explore potential career options that combine key areas of interest with their expert status and transferable skills.
Of course, what naturally happens during the process, is that their mindset shifts, they start to see possibility and future instead of barriers to career satisfaction, and the passions come out anyway. Clever that!
If you’re feeling a bit stuck on how to create your ideal career, no problem – I’ve created a rather nifty 8-page ebook to help you work out your ‘what next’, which includes the exact 5 step formula I’ve been using with hundreds of my clients over the last 9 years to help them change career too. So go ahead, download it here and enjoy!
