Don't Let Frustration Be Your Downfall

It’s normal to get frustrated at work right?  When things go wrong and plans don’t go to plan, you can find yourself getting a little bit rattled.   And then it’s easy to end up snapping at a colleague, writing an email that’s a little too blunt, or just being a tad tricky to be around – none of which help you get the job done any faster!  If you’ve been battling with your frustration levels recently it’s time to take stock…

Find The Zone

It’s easy to end up feeling frustrated, especially if you’re a bit of a perfectionist.  Whilst that natural reaction of irritation can sometimes help spur you on, one of the downsides is that frustration can really muck with your level of focus and productivity.

If you’re an aspiring leader, or want to forge ahead and build a successful career, your ability to manage your emotions and have behavioral flexibility is key.  If you let frustration take hold it means your focusing your energy and efforts on a byproduct rather than the end goal, and being truly productive is about staying in the zone and not getting sidetracked along the way.

Get comfortable with the fact that things will go wrong, plans will unravel, and people will behave in unexpected ways.  When you’re expecting these ‘distractions’ your emotional reaction will be different, and you’ll be able to manage your level of frustration much more effectively.

Take a moment now to think about the things that are frustrating you most at work.  How can you respond differently instead of getting irritated by them?  Look at how you can take back control and instead focus your energies on moving forward.  Just a small shift in your thinking can bring about big changes in your reactions, and actions.
