Can Looking Good Help You Get Ahead?

This can be a touchy subject for many, and a question that no-one wants to categorically answer ‘Yes’ to because it seems callous and, well, wrong!  But if we consider for a moment that feeling good about yourself helps boost confidence and THAT alone can help you get ahead significantly, then we’re onto a topic that everyone has control over, and should do something about.  Here’s how…

Get That Job

Think back to a time when you felt really confident.  Now consider what you were wearing, how you behaved, what your body language was like, and the tone of your voice.

Now consider for a moment a time when you didn’t feel so good. Again, what were you wearing?  Did you hold your head up high or were your eye’s down and your shoulders slumped?   How were you communicating?  Were you quiet and timid, or stumbling over your words?

All of these ingredients contribute to how confident we feel, and ultimately how other people perceive us.  If you’re wearing a killer suit, have just had your hair done, are walking tall and sound like an expert, it’s likely that you’re 1) feeling good, and therefore 2) looking good to those around you.

Of course, this has nothing to do with the romantics of attraction, but instead it has everything to do with whether someone will consider hiring you or engaging your services.  If you are exuding confidence in the way you hold yourself and communicate, it doesn’t matter whether you’re Miss/Mr Universe or not, you will create a strong first impression, and we all know that first impressions count.

Hoping, pretending or just ignoring the fact that how you look is important can be damaging when it comes to career success.  People who dress well and take pride in their appearance are much more likely to be asked back for a second interview or make that all-important sale.

So if you’re struggling to secure a new job, or would like to be more successful in your business, take a moment to look in the mirror and reassess.  Perhaps it’s time to make some changes, and give yourself a spring clean.  Or maybe, you just need to pay more attention to YOU as well as your CV, covering letter and on-line profile!  Either way, careful grooming and attention to detail when it comes to your communication and body language are important components in business that no-one can afford to ignore.
