Mistakes, I’ve made a few. Well, a lot actually, and I continue to make them fast and furiously. And in case you’re wondering, that’s a good thing…
Outshine, my first ‘child’, turned 9 years old on Saturday. I felt like a proud parent watching their kid walk up on stage to receive an award, because I remember how skeptical people were when I changed career and set up my own business.
But here I am *almost* a decade later (exciting things planned for next year!) and this business is still here, and firmly positioned to stay.
But it hasn’t all been plain sailing, and I’ve made so many mistakes along the way I’ve lost count, and frankly don’t even care. And I think that’s why I’m still here today because I’m not afraid to try new things, put myself out there, take a risk, fall down, and get back up to do it all again (with a few tweaks, of course!).
So what I want to say to you today – to celebrate this little beauty’s birthday – is this: don’t be afraid to give it your all. Don’t sit back wondering ‘what if’, daydreaming about what your career or life *could* have been like, or *should* have been like. Don’t waste time fretting about what could go wrong, and over-analysing every conceivable situation until you’re so damn confused and stuck you can’t see the wood for the trees.
Sure, do your due diligence, get your ducks lined up in a row and have a plan that’s realistic and makes sense. But recognise that you’re not going to be able to wrap everything up in cotton wool. Risk has to be part of the equation if you really want to create a career you love, because nothing amazing ever comes from staying in your comfort zone.
If you’ve been stuck in some sort of groundhog day for far too long, take this post as the sign you need to get off your backside and make some changes.
I wouldn’t turn the clock back for anything. Corporate life would have been WAY easier, WAY more convenient, and WAY less stressful. But it wasn’t for me.
Find out what ‘is’ for you and pursue it right now. You’ll never regret going after something that you love, and regardless of the twists and turns that may unfold, it’s better to have tried and failed, than to never know.
