Is your career feeling a little stale?  Perhaps you’ve been with the same company for years and have been overlooked for promotion, or maybe you’re just bored of your job and need to get your mojo back before it’s too late.  Either way, if you feel as though you career has stalled here are 5 simple steps to help you get back on track fast…

Freshen Up Fast

Step 1:  Identify Options

When you feel stuck in a rut it’s important to consciously think about your prospects and explore the options available to you, rather than wasting time focusing on how bored or overlooked you feel.

  • What would you like to see happen in your career?
  • Do you enjoy your current career or is it time to change?
  • Do you want to continue working for the same company or would you like to try somewhere new?
  • Do you want to work in the same location or overseas?
  • Do you want to be an employee or an entrepreneur?

Take the time to think about what excites and challenges you, get clear on what you want professionally and explore your options fully.  This is the time to be bold in your aspirations and actions so that you create a new career plan that you’re excited about, rather than putting up with the same-old.

Step 2:  Be Valuable

If you want to get promoted you need to be proactive in coming up with new initiatives and ideas to make you stand out and get noticed.  What can you offer your company to support their growth and success?  Go the extra mile and give more than your current job demands.  By thinking about how you can benefit the business you work for you will make yourself invaluable – something that’s imperative if you want to be considered promotion material!

Step 3:  Ask The Hard Questions

If you’re not moving forward in your career it’s time to ask yourself why?  Self-awareness is vital in order to get better results so be brutally honest with yourself and quit the excuses.

It’s also critical to understand how those at the top see you, so request a meeting with your boss and find out.  Make sure you’ve practiced step 2 for at least a month beforehand and ensure the conversation is tipped in your favour by showing your commitment to the company rather than focusing solely on what they can do for you!

Step 4:  Get Positive

It’s proven that happy people have more successful and rewarding careers because they’re pleasant to be around, more relaxed and approachable, and give the impression of being in control, confident and able to handle stress.  Start lifting the atmosphere at work with a positive outlook and let your disposition become one of your key assets.

Step 5:  Be Strategic

Become more savvy in managing and promoting your career.  If success matters to you don’t be coy in pushing yourself forward – recognise where you want to be, and if you aren’t going to get there with your current employer do the courageous thing and move on.
