If you’re don’t already have a profile on LinkedIn, you should.  And if you do, then you need to make sure you sure it’s working for you, and not against you.  Regardless of whether you’re looking for a job or building a business, if you want to get ahead in your career you need to have a presence on this powerful networking site.

Put Yourself Out There

With over 50 million users globally, LinkedIn has made the world a much smaller place if you want to network your way to the top.  And as I’ve said many times before, your network is your net worth, so this really should be a no-brainer!

Around the globe, people turn to LinkedIn to create and manage their professional identities online, and to collaborate with a network of trusted individuals, defining themselves and their business to the rest of the world.

With all of that at stake, it’s imperative – if you want to grow professionally – to have a profile on LinkedIn, but despite the exposure being so large, many people don’t concentrate on getting the fundamentals right.

Here are 5 simple steps that you can take today to get your profile off to a great start:-

  1. Add a photo – everyone likes to see who they are dealing with and to make sure that you’re a REAL person so make sure you upload the most professional photo you have of yourself
  2. Write an interesting profile summary – this is the ‘prime real estate’ on your LinkedIn profile so take the time to carve out a few paragraphs that engage the reader, rather than simply rehash your career movements over the last 20 years.
  3. Join groups – to make Linkedin work for you, you MUST actively participate rather than being a passive bystander.  An easy and enjoyable way to do this is to join groups that focus on your areas of interest and actively participate in discussions, and even better, start a discussion yourself.  Join the Outshine Linkedin group now and add your comments to our discussion board.
  4. Update your status – one of the most under-utilised tools on LinkedIn is the status bar where you can update the people in your network on what you’re currently doing, the projects you’re working on, the jobs you’re looking for, the articles you’ve written etc etc.  Just like Facebook updates, but make sure you keep them strictly professional!
  5. Ask for recommendations – the functionality on LinkedIn makes it super-easy for you to request recommendations from people who you have worked with, and done a good job for.  So don’t be shy, send out some requests today as these will help viewers of your profile really get to know you and build a clearer picture in their mind of whether they would like to work with you or potentially hire you.

There’s a lot more to LinkedIn than these 5 steps however these are an excellent starting point to help build your profile and get you actively working on using LinkedIn effectively.

So take action today – join the Outshine group on LinkedIn for career and time management resources, invite me to join your network, and update your profile so that the world see’s you in the best light possible!
