5 Simple Steps To Boost Your Career Before Xmas

A lot of people take their foot off the accelerator when it comes to managing their career in the lead up to xmas.  However, it’s actually one of the best times of year to get on top of all of those things you’ve been ‘meaning to do’ that will actually help you move forward professionally.

So if you want to capitalise on the silly-season and get ahead in 2016, here are 5 simple steps that will give your career a healthy boost before the year is out…

1.  Update Your Resume

It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking to change jobs or not, it’s important to keep your resume current so that you never fall into the trap of having to go through a last-minute lengthy overhaul when you urgently need to send your CV out.  At the very least, update your current job – it’s much easier to do when you’re currently in the role and can remember what you’re doing!

2.  Get Active On LinkedIn

Now that your CV’s up to date, do the same with your LinkedIn profile.  Update your work experience, make sure your profile title is accurate and eye catching, and ensure you have a nice professional photo.

Then it’s time to start actively participating – join plenty of relevant and interesting groups, get involved in their discussions, and send connection requests to people who you would like to get to know better.  For more tips on using LinkedIn click here.

3.  Do A SWOT Analysis

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.  Spend some time identifying what your weaknesses are and make sure you have a plan of action to address the ones that are important in your career.  By being proactive you will set yourself apart from the competition, and ensure that you are continually developing and moving forward professionally.

Then look at your strengths and make sure you’re capitilising on the ones you like most – if not, consider changing jobs or careers.   Look at how you can combine opportunities in your company, industry or career with your strengths, but also be mindful of what threats exist (i.e. changes in industry regulations, qualifications, restructures etc) and wherever possible plan to minimise those risks.

4.  Get Connected

Now is the perfect time to catch-up with ex-colleagues, mentors, prospective bosses, peers…. the list goes on!  Networking is a vital part of managing your career successfully and the lead up to xmas gives you the perfect excuse to get together over a coffee or lunch.  Remember – your network is your net worth, but relationships take time to develop so don’t put off those important connections anymore.

5.  Put A Plan In Place

If you’ve been ‘too busy’ all year to sit down and really think about what you want your career to look like, make sure you factor this important exercise into your pre-xmas schedule.  Write down what you want to achieve professionally in the next 12 months and importantly, make sure you have a strategy in place to help you achieve those goals.
