15 Easy Ways To Make Yourself Stand Out

It can be a cut-throat world so if you want to get ahead in your career or business it’s important to stand out from the crowd.  Fading into the background, or settling for mediocre will only get you so far, and lets face it that probably won’t magic up a stellar career or overflowing bank balance.  Whilst there are a myriad of career strategies that you can follow (and I recommend you do!), there are also some very simple steps you can take to get noticed for all the right reasons.

Easy Peasy …. but so often overlooked!

If you want to up the anti when it comes to your professional life, there are some really easy things you can do which are so often taken for granted that they get overlooked and mismanaged.

As a result, you can really differentiate yourself by doing the easy things first that everyone else has forgotten. Work your way through this simple list, applying the steps consistently, and see the difference they make: –

  1. Pick up the phone: don’t rely on email and texting like everyone else, have a real conversation and connect properly
  2. Say please and thank you: I’m teaching my toddler the same technique, but why do so many adults forget the fundamentals?  Do it every time without exception.
  3. Go the extra mile: do a little bit more than expected – people WILL remember you for it
  4. Send thank you cards: this is SO much more impressive than an email and creates a lasting impression
  5. Respond in a timely manner: don’t leave people hanging – decide on your response times and stick to them
  6. Be genuinely interested in others: ask questions, find out more, and show you’re interested in more than yourself/your job
  7. Turn up early: make it your mantra to never be late again, it sets a great first impression and shows true professionalism
  8. Be prepared: always, without fail, go to a meeting prepared – write notes, even if it’s just a line or two – people WILL notice
  9. Dress sharp: take pride in your appearance and always dress as you want to be perceived, not how you feel on the day
  10. Do more than your job description: no-one likes a jobs-worth, so put your hand up and try to do more, your career will thank you for it
  11. Build rapport: make the effort to create more meaningful relationships in your career rather than transactional ones
  12. Take responsibility: if you’re not getting the results you want, change the way YOU work and communicate, rather than expecting others to change
  13. Hunt & gather: ask more questions so you’re armed with more information to make smart decisions – never assume!
  14. Communicate wisely: be purposeful in the way you communicate by choosing your tone, pace, pitch, and words wisely – don’t take them for granted.
  15. Know where you’re going: have clear goals and a plan of attack to reach them – this will make you manage your time and resources smartly

What else do you do that helps you stand out at work or in your business? Please post a comment below, I’d love to know!

One Response to 15 Easy Ways To Make Yourself Stand Out

  1. Hi Faye,
I agree the easiest things are usually the ones forgotten but can have a big impact.

Consistency is definitely the key. If you do these things as a once off people will see right through you, but if you make them apart of your daily business you will leave a big impression on people.
