Ditch Your Memory To Improve Productivity

If you want to improve the way you work, get more done in less time and sleep better then there’s one important thing you must stop doing, and that’s relying on your memory.  It doesn’t matter how good you are at remembering things, trying to use your memory as a way to keep track of your to-do list is a big mistake when it comes to productivity – here’s why…

Forget Me Not

I’ll admit it, I’ve got a terrible memory.  I’m good with faces, but not names, and I’m awful at remembering small details and dates.  So I’ve always been a stickler for writing things down – it helps me retain more information and it reduces stress as then I don’t have to worry about running the risk of forgetting something important.

Here’s the thing – most people need to keep track of lots of little bits of information as part of their day-to-day life but unfortunately most also aren’t able to keep on top of all of these details without getting overwhelmed.

Trying to remember everything, instead of writing it down, can cause anxiety and stress, the inability to plan effectively, a loss of focus and a lot of wasted time trying to remember what it was you were supposed to be doing!

So the solution is easy.  Buy a notepad and start writing down your to-do’s and things-to-remember.  This only takes seconds but the benefits can be huge as it allows your mind to rest or to move on to the next task without wasting time and focus.  It’s also been shown to improve the quality of sleep because you can switch off and relax more easily instead worrying about what you might forget when you nod off!

Clearly this isn’t ground-breaking advice, but it’s amazing how many people are causing themselves undue stress and worry simply by trying to remember more than their mind allows!  So make life easy for yourself – start writing your to-do list down – it’s the first step to improving your productivity and reducing stress!
