Beware: The Real Cost Of Being A Cheapskate

Confession:  I used to be a cheapskate.  When I started my business up nearly 5 years ago, funds were very thin on the ground so I made the most of all the webinars, teleseminars, articles and advice I could get for free.  And there’s no doubt about it, they definitely helped me.  However, I realised over time that relying on the cheapskate option was actually costing me dearly in the long run – here’s why…

Don’t Be Tight

There’s nothing wrong with lapping up free advice but the problem is that the best advice, the best information, and the best support rarely (if ever!) comes for free.

Everything has a cost, and whilst it’s smart to save money and do your best to get a good deal, all the free advice in the world won’t ever equate to the same quality of advice you could get if you paid.

For me that meant that I got some good tips at no cost, but the freebies never took me to the next level where it actually impacted the results I was getting.  And ultimately, it’s all about results in business.

When I got over this ‘free mindset’ and decided that it was time to invest in my development, instead of wasting time scouting around for all the freebies out there, I saw a dramatic difference in the results I got and the way I thought about my business.  The same goes for any career choice, regardless of whether you’re the boss or not.

By getting quality training and advice I was able to get my hands on information, strategies and techniques that you simply can’t get anywhere for free.   No-one is handing out their BEST advice for nothing, and it’s certainly not included in a free e-book or teleseminar that you can download in an instant.

So if you want to get ahead of your competition, and really take your development seriously you have to be ready to invest in it.

Think of it like this – you can either stand on the sidelines and watch a great business build, or a promising career flourish, OR you can be the person that’s actually experiencing it first hand.  That’s the difference between a ‘free mindset’ and a ‘success mindset’.

Use the free advice out there as a taster, but don’t spend hours trawling through it when you could be making some serious decisions about ‘what next’ and then taking action.  If you look at the people you admire – career blazers and inspiring entrepreneurs – they didn’t get to where they are today through freebies alone.  They took themselves seriously and they got the best advice they could afford.  Simple.

So what are you going to do this year to really accelerate your career or business? Decide now to take yourself seriously and give yourself the best you possibly can.
