It’s that time of year when we’re bombarded with a 101 blog posts about goal setting. SHOOT ME NOW!
I’ll ‘fess up instantly and admit that I’ve written a library full of goal setting articles, all of which are incredibly awesome. Yes, you read that right!
BUT over the course of this year I decided to do things differently, and because it’s worked out really well for me I reckon you might enjoy a dose of this too…
So what did I do that was such a change from the norm? It’s simple – I chose a theme.
Much like a kids party, I thought about how I wanted my year to shape up, chose a word that resonated with that (= theme) and then I splashed that theme all over this year with my actions.
My theme was DISRUPT.
This was shocking to many because picking a theme is all about creating that feeling in your life. So focusing on disruption, some would say, has a lot of negative connotations.
But not for me.
I love the word disrupt. It feels bold and powerful and purposeful. There’s no messing around, wondering or faffing. To me it’s about doing, committing, and importantly – change.
So in living my theme, I’ve spent the last 12 months disrupting a lot in my life. Not because I was unhappy or needed significant change, but because I didn’t want to accept the ‘norm’ and instead wanted to challenge my status quo.
So with all of that under my belt, what’s my focus for 2017 I hear you ask?
Good question. Let me enlighten you … my theme for the new year is: Connect
Given that I’ve disrupted everything this year, and it’s been pretty epic on many levels, I’ve decided the new year needs a slightly – let’s say – more gentle approach.
So in 2017 I want to: –
So that’s my theme laid out all naked and vulnerable, and I’m really excited about it.
Which is exactly how you should feel about your theme. It’s something you’re going to live and breathe for a year, so make sure it really resonates with you and that you’re inspired by the ultimate outcome because at times it might test your commitment – disruption certainly did for me!
SO that’s a lot about my experience with living a theme, but why should you be picking a theme? Here are 3 key benefits that I know you’ll love:-
You’re sold right? Of course you are.
So what’s your theme going to be? Post a comment below … you know mine so it’s only fair we trade right?
P.S. You still need goals to create a career you love, but a theme adds a whole new layer to make the year even more interesting!
