3 Key Ingredients To A Great New Year

Published: December 20, 2011

Over the next few weeks you’ll probably contemplate the year ahead and mull over what you’d like 2012 to look like.  Whether it’s a few minutes devising new years resolutions, or a proper planning session carefully constructing inspiring goals, there are a few key ingredients you should always consider to help make the new year your best yet…

Your Best Year Yet

Just like baking a cake, having the proper ingredients and mixing them up in the right order is pretty important.   If you want your year to rise successfully, follow these 3 easy steps: –

1.    Follow The Recipe

It’s much harder to bake a great cake if you’ve got no idea what cake you’re trying to bake or what needs to go into the recipe.  Likewise, if you want to to enjoy a fabulous year you need to work out what you want the year to look like first – only then can you decide on what ingredients, or actions, are required.

Here’s how to work out what you want your year to look like: –

  • Grab a pen and paper, sit down and relax – making sure you are free from distractions (phone on silent, email off, kids asleep….!)
  • Imagine it was this time next year – what would you like to tell your friends, family and biggest competitor that you’ve achieved over the last 12 months?
  • Write down everything you come up with- personally and professionally – and be as specific as you can.  The more detailed your notes, the better the outcome (… remember, it’s like baking a cake – you need to know exactly what ingredients are required to get a great result)

2.  Get The Right Utensils

Now that you know ‘what’ you want to bake, it’s time to work out ‘how’ to do it.

It’s not easy to bake a cake without the right utensils, and the same goes for your new year goals … if you want to set up a business but don’t know how to sell or market your products/services, or want to get a new job but haven’t got a clue where to start, you don’t have the utensils you need.

Now you know what the recipe looks like it’s important to work out what tools are required and then either go out and get them yourself, or get someone else to help you so that you can leverage off their skills, knowledge and expertise.

3.  Get Mixing

Sitting look at the ingredients and utensils won’t help you bake a great cake!   It’s all well and good knowing what you want, and how to get it, but if you don’t start putting it all together and taking action you still won’t get the results you’re looking for.

This critical component is why 95% of people don’t achieve their New Year’s resolutions – they simply don’t do what’s required to get what they want (most people are too lazy!).  You must take action to make 2012 your best year yet.

So now that you know what you want, and what you need to do to achieve it, spend some time planning your actions and diarise them so that you know what you’re doing and when.  Share your goals with those around you to aid accountability, and consider hiring a coach to help you achieve your goals in the fastest and easiest way possible.

So what do you want to achieve in 2012? If you’re brave enough, post a comment below and let me know… putting your goals ‘out there’ in the public domain is a GREAT way to boost your motivation and commitment to achieve them.  Over to you……
