When were you last really brave at work? If it’s been a while since you got outside of your comfort zone, had butterflies in your stomach, and a burst of adrenaline coursing through your veins, it’s probably time to brave up…
We live in a world of constant change so no-one can afford to be complacent when it comes to their career. There are a lot of traits that career climbers possess that help them build great careers, but there’s one behavior that will really set you apart from the rest…
Being Brave is all about showing courage, turning up and making a ‘fine appearance’, demonstrating admirable qualities and defying challenges. To me it’s about doing the things that push me out of my comfort zone and help me eliminate my weaknesses whilst building new skills and knowledge. Bravery helps me grow as a person, and exposes me to new situations that I would otherwise shy away from.
But lets face it, being brave can be really hard.
It’s much easier to sit back and do what you’ve always done than to take a leap of faith and do something that exposes you to the professional elements. However, that exposure is often what you need if you want to climb the career ladder and keep progressing in life.
So if it’s time for you to brave-up and take your career up notch here are 5 areas to start focusing on on a daily basis: –
1. Take Responsibility
This is the toughie – you have to bring yourself to ’cause’ and accept responsibility for the results you’re getting. When you can suspend the temptation to blame others and instead be brave enough to look at what YOU could do differently, that’s when you’ll see a real shift in your level of career satisfaction and the success you achieve. By looking for ways to do things differently and by changing your behavior, approach and attitude it’s impossible NOT to get new and more positive results.
2. Have Courage
If you’ve been holding back, sitting on the sidelines or getting frustrated, be brave enough to have a courageous conversation and set some new wheels in motion. Sure, it can be nerve-wracking, and of course you’re going to feel out of your comfort zone – fearful of what might be said and worried that you might look silly – but if you really want to be successful then you must be willing to deal with on some tricky conversations. Successful leaders don’t shy away from the tough topics, and when handled well you will be admired for your ability to confront what others avoid.
3. Embrace Risk
No-one reaches the pinnacle of a great career without taking some risks. Being successful isn’t about doing what you’ve always done and simply hoping for bigger, better and more rewarding results. It’s about being brave enough to take calculated risks and back yourself. If you were to do something today that made you feel uncomfortable, but that you knew would move forward professionally, what would that be? Take action on it today.
4. Welcome Change
Most people don’t like change and that explains a lot when it comes to real career satisfaction and success. When you’re brave enough to look for change, to hunt it down and welcome it when it comes along, you’ll find a whole new world of possibilities open up to you.
5. Accept Fear
You’ve heard the phrase “feel the fear and do it anyway” right? Well, when you’re brave enough to realise that fear plays an important part in your own personal development, and – like change – you start to welcome it, amazing things can happen. By getting stuck into tasks and conversations that you would normally run away from, you expose yourself to new situations where you have no choice but to learn and grow.
By chipping away at these 5 areas, and learning to embrace them everyday, you’ll be able to introduce more and more bravery into your life – and your career will definitely thank you for it!
