The Ultimate Deception

I was in an spin cycling class on Monday morning, pedaling away, when the instructor screamed out “stop cheating yourself … turn the resistance UP NOW!”.  Her outburst wasn’t aimed specifically at me however it got me thinking about whether I was really putting my ‘all’ into the session, or if I was actually wimping out and taking the easy route.  I’ve chanted the same kind of encouragement to many of my clients over the years when I’ve noticed them cheating themselves out of getting a new job or building a great business.  What are you doing right now to cheat yourself?

Stop Cheating Yourself

Taking the easy path isn’t always a bad thing, BUT taking the most effortless option when it comes to things in your life that really matter nearly always has negative consequences.

Let’s take the example of looking for a new job.   If you’ve been made redundant, or are super-keen to escape the clutches of your current employer, sending out one or two job applications a week, or meeting with the odd recruiter here and there, is nowhere near the level of activity needed to demonstrate a committed job search that gets results.  You’re cheating yourself.

If you’re a business owner and want to increase your profits, filing your emails nicely or and busying yourself keeping up to date on the internet is not going to give you the same results as working hard on your business development or marketing plan.  Again, you’re simply cheating yourself.

And if you want to get fit and healthy, eating a packet of low-calories biscuits a day, or only pushing yourself 50% in a circuit class, won’t transform you into a lean, mean, fitness machine.  Guess what?  You’re cheating yourself.

It’s time for a reality check.  Whatever your goal right now, be brutally honest with yourself –  is it possible to turn your efforts up a notch or two?  If it is, then it’s time to start sweating a bit more, showing more commitment to your goals, and importantly, more dedication to YOURSELF.  By taking the easy path you are simply duping the most important person – YOU – which in my book, is the biggest deception of all!

What are you going to do today to take your commitment up a peg or two? Post a comment below and increase your accountability right now…
