Modesty won’t get you a career you love, new clients, great contacts or even a date! Waiting for someone to discover how great you are so that you land your perfect job is like relying on winning the lottery to get rich. Yes, it’d be nice and very convenient, but the chances are next to nil! So unless you want to leave your future hanging in the balance, it’s time to start selling yourself to get ahead…
I’m not suggesting you take the ‘Pretty Woman’ sales approach and start pimping yourself out, but as the saying goes, you’ve got to be in it to win it. Unfortunately far too many people shy away from promoting themselves and as a result miss out on opportunities that they are more than capable of achieving with a little self-promotion.
Modesty certainly has it’s place, but it’s not an effective strategy if you want to get ahead this century! Lets face it, if you can’t talk about how good you are at something, or confidently market yourself to your network, how can you expect others to do it for you?
Take Apple, Nike and Mercedes for example – all strong brands with products that people want. The question is, do you think we’d want them if we didn’t know how good they are? Probably not – and the same applies to you.
Every one of us is a brand too, and your marketing plan needs to follow suit if you want people to ‘buy’ you. Pitching your abilities and strengths is a must – trust me, the people who want to hire you or date have a very vested interest in knowing what you’re capable of!
Don’t shy away from blowing your own trumpet and telling people what makes you great. As long as you’re professional, you practice the art of listening and you communicate with finesse then there’s nothing wrong with marketing yourself openly.
And if you’re nervous about tooting your own horn in person, don’t forget that the web is a fabulous way to get your message out there without having to confront your fears on a daily basis (…. but don’t put it off for too long though!).
