It's Not Sucking Up

We all know it’s important to build a strong network if you want to get a new job, but what if you love where you work and aren’t looking to move – do you still need to network?  The answer is a big, emphatic YES.  Don’t panic though, this doesn’t mean you need to be pounding the pavement at every networking event in town.  What I’m talking about is internal networking and it’s critical to your career success.  Here’s why…..

Why Internal Networking Matters

Internal networking is all about reaching out to other people in your organisation when your job doesn’t require you to.  So that means talking to and meeting with people that you don’t have to, and being the one to initiate those interactions.  And lets be clear, internal networking is not about sucking up.

Getting to know the people inside the company you work for, even when you don’t regularly work with them, has many benefits and really should be viewed as a ‘must do’ activity if you want to get ahead professionally.

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise to hear that internal networking is often overlooked.  It’s one of those things that too many of us wished we’d done months or years ago, because – when you find you really need a strong network – it’s often too late to build one by then.

Having a strong internal network has many benefits: –

  • It increases your visibility within an organisation which in turns improves your chances of promotion
  • Allows you to position yourself as the ‘go to’ person once people know who you are, what you do, and how you add value
  • Makes your job easier because you have a ‘board of directors’ to reach out to
  • Provides a platform to position yourself as an expert, improving your personal brand and overall career development opportunities
  • Internal networking is all about strategic career development – if you want to get ahead you really do need to have a positive presence within your organisation and not just your immediate team.

Getting to know as many people as you can, at all levels, and showing that you’re happy to add value outside of your immediate job remit will keep you front-of-mind when new opportunities arise and promotions get dished out.

So take a moment now to audit your internal network – who do you know, and importantly, where are the gaps? Have you got connections in all departments, at varying levels, or are you relying on the odd one or two peers you met at drinks a few years ago?

Internal networking requires a plan, a conscious effort, and a consistent approach.  But if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to build valuable relationships you will definitely reap the rewards later on.
