How To Avoid The Downward Spiral Of Success

I love the current Career One TV commercial as it makes a really good point about success.  From my experience as a Career Coach far too many people get caught up in what others perceive success to be, and as a result end up on a career path they find boring and unfulfilling.  I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve coached over the years who have slogged it out in a role they thought would make them successful only to realise that they were chasing someone else’s dreams, and ultimately needed to change career to experience their own definition of success…

What’s Your Interpretation?

Regardless of your profession, it’s imperative you choose a career YOU – and not your parents, teacher, best mate, milkman – find satisfying.  And to do that you need to know what your version of ‘success’ looks like.

As the Career One advert nicely illustrates, we all have different interpretations of what ‘success’ really is.  So it goes without saying that if you follow someone else’s definition you might find yourself stuck in a job or career you ultimately don’t give too hoots about!

So what is ‘success’ to you? Is it a job title, a lifestyle, or a location?  Is it running your own business, managing a team or being a board member?  The list of options is almost endless which is why it’s such a tragedy when people find themselves stuck in someone else’s picture of success.

Take a few moments now to figure out what success is to you and write your ideas down. Don’t leave them swirling about inside your head as you’re much less likely to do anything about ‘success’ if it’s all in your mind.  Getting creative and drawing up a vision board is a great way of putting your ideas down on paper as well as having a visual reminder of what you’re aiming for on a daily basis.

Once you’ve written your vision down carry out a quick self-audit – whose goals are in front of you?  Did your Mum always want you to be a Pilot/Nurse/Gardener {insert job title here!} or are you looking at YOUR OWN interpretation of success?

When you are clear on what success is to you, you’ll have a far greater chance of actually achieving it.  But going after someone else’s goals and aspirations is more likely to be a recipe for disaster than the secret to success.
