How Much Do You Really Want A New Job?

Deciding you want a new job can be really exciting.  And daunting.  And overwhelming.  All at the same time.

It’s fun to be filled with possibility, and to focus on thinking about how awesome the future’s going to be when you’re sitting firmly in your sparkly new position, with a juicy new salary, some wonderful employee benefits, and career prospects that you never thought you’d have.

But the gap between where you are right now, and acquiring that fabulous new role might seem huge.  And the reality is, it IS huge if you don’t have a good job search strategy in place.

Getting a new role takes time, effort and commitment.  And from my experience, the reality of what’s actually involved is a far cry from what most people think makes a good job search.

Registering your details on on-line job boards, and meeting with a recruiter or two does NOT constitute a good job search.  And yet that’s more than a lot of people think it takes to get their dream job.

It’s also not enough to have a killer CV, or know how to interview like a boss.  Because if you’re not ‘out there’, no-one’s going to be looking at your CV or inviting you for interview anyway.

When it comes to securing your next position, it’s important to be clear on what you’re aiming to achieve (what job do you want and with whom?) and then build an action plan that puts you in front of the right people to make that happen.

Activity levels are also critical.  I’m not suggesting you spam your details around town, BUT if you think sending only one CV out every now and again, or going to one networking event, is going to get the results you want, you’re likely to be very disappointed.

There are lots of key elements to a great job search, and like anything that’s worth achieving, you need to invest time, energy and effort into making it happen.  Consistent action, focused on the right tasks, will deliver great results.  But unfortunately, excitement alone is not enough!
