How To Focus On Ordinary Things To Get Great Results
18 November 2009

With only 6 weeks left until the end of the year, you might be feeling as though you’re running out of time to get everything done that you wanted to achieve in 2009. As the clock keeps ticking you can either decide to let those goals fall by the wayside, allow overwhelm kick in and get stressed, or you could choose to focus on the ordinary things that are going to give you great results...
3 Steps To Get Great Results
If your ‘To Do’ list is turning into a novel, if you’re feeling under pressure to get too much done in not enough time, or you’re feeling disappointed that you’ve not achieved your goals this year it’s time to stop for a moment and consider how you’re going to approach the next 6 weeks.
Goal setting is a key ingredient to living a successful life, but if you don’t have a smart strategy to achieve your goals then you’re potentially setting yourself up for a downfall. Similarly, if your goals is too big and you’re unrealistic about what you want achieve in the time you’ve got you could find yourself in the midst of overwhelm and dissatisfaction.
So, whether you want to plow through your To Do list at work, achieve a milestone in your business, or reach a weight loss goal, it doesn’t matter - with only 6 weeks left until the end of the year now is the time to reassess your position and follow these 3 key steps to get on track:-
Step 1: Be Clear And Reasonable
The first step to achieving anything in life is to know what you want, so get clear on what you want to accomplish in the next 6 weeks and then check your goals for ‘reasonableness’. In other words, do you believe it’s possible to achieve your goals in the timeframe you have? If you don’t, then change your goals or change your beliefs - but either way, somethings gotta give because you need to see the outcome as a possibility to actually achieve it.
Step 2: Formulate A Plan Of Attack
Now you’re clear on what you want to achieve it’s important that you invest some time in putting together a smart strategy to reach your goal. There is no point in having a goal if you don’t plan how you’re going to achieve it. Visualise the end result that you’re aiming for and then work backwards and write down every step you need to take to get there. Importantly, make your steps small and manageable - we’re not looking for great leaps here, just ordinary steps that contribute to your bigger goal.
Step 3: Get Moving
One of my favorite quotes that had helped me achieve some of my biggest goals is this - “Ordinary things, consistently done, produce extraordinary results”.
Why is this so powerful? Well, because consistency is key. You can do the most amazing things, but if they are done sporadically you won’t necessarily achieve your goals, and the effort required to do those amazing things might actually put you off doing anything at all! However, if you take consistent action everyday towards your goals you will, eventually, reach them.
As you plan your strategy schedule time in your diary to take consistent action every day and commit to keeping that ‘appointment’ with yourself, just like you would if you were meeting an important client or picking your kids up from school - it’s non-negotiable.
So what are you waiting for? Put these 3 steps in place today and make sure you reach the end of the year on a high!
