3 Resolutions That Helped Build My Ideal Career
13 January 2010

Whether you’re a fan of making new year’s resolutions or not, the start of the year is always a good time to think about your career and start planning how you want the next 12 months to unfold. If you leave your career to chance you might find that you’re no further forward this time next year, so choose to make January the month you get your career on track and follow these 3 key resolutions that helped me build my ideal career...
Plan Of Attack
There are lots of things you can do to make sure 2010 is a great year for you. Here are 3 things that have I done consistently that have helped me build a career I love, and I’d like to share those with you: -
1. Formulate & Review
First and foremost, you MUST have a sense of direction if you want to create a career you love, which means you need to have career goals. If you’ve got no idea where you’re heading in your career it’s highly unlikely you’re going to wake up one day loving your job. Spend some time thinking about what your ideal career looks like and WRITE DOWN your career goals. Once you are clear on your goals, formulate a plan on how you’re going to achieve them and make sure you review your goals and plan on a regular basis - ideally weekly. This first step is fundamental to career success and satisfaction.
2. Learn & Develop
If you want to create a significant advantage for yourself when it comes to your career you need to dedicate time and effort into your own personal learning and development. Take advantage of the training that’s available to you through your current employer, ask about funding options for courses you would like to attend, and if you run your own business make sure you allocate a training budget for yourself. There’s no excuse for putting your learning on hold if you truly want to advance your career and love your job!
3. Networking
I can’t stress this enough - your network is incredibly important to your career success, but unfortunately it’s something that’s often overlooked. Make a concerted effort to build and develop your personal and professional network this year, and ensure that you have a ‘givers gain’ mentality by adding value to your network rather than simply just taking.
These 3 resolutions are simple, effective and easy to implement, and will have a significant impact on your career if you work on them consistently.
